1st of all--- Compare "The Hits" if using a Prince hits collection.

2ndly- George Michael made some good pop songs. Prince is a category/genre all his own. End of Story.

Oh shit you are not joking. I'm really sorry.

See Prince is for me in the category of the Sly Stones, Miles Davis, Stevie Wonder, James Brown...

So well...How can I express this without hurting your feelings. Uh George Michael makes some nice little pop songs but ether as a musician, producer, arranger, performer or songwritter, he is just nowhere near all the names I have mentionned just above.

And no, I do not live in a purple bubble. I own more than 1500 cds of all genres of music so I would not qualify myself as narrow minded.

well, this is a prince fan site so you gotta expect this type of responce...this thread might have gone over a lil better in the non-prince forum...

that being said, i think prince and george michael are equals when it comes to "pop" tunes.....michael's is better at the acoustic lesbian-ish gut wrenching tunes and prince blows away michaels in every other existing category thought up by men (and some yet to be thought up).

Firstly bro, you aint going to hurt my feelings. It objective input to me. Well input just the same.

and I agree that as a guitar player Prince has George beat hands down. But George does produce, perform, and write his own songs. As far as arranging, if someone is performer songwriter and producer, I dont see how they are not arranging. But I guess some dont feel the need to say so. I guess that's their fault for missing out on the chance of someone confusing them with a musical genius or something.

And lastly George Michale I feel can not just be dismissed as just a pop performer. I find much of his work very soulful and funky. His songwriting skill, in my opinion overreach those of Prince.

Thanks for the input

He didn't say that George doesn't produce arrange etc. He just said that in his opinion George wasn't in the same league as the other names he mentioned.

Whats the point in asking this question to a lot of Prince fans??? You know what answer you'll get...

George Michael is an okay pop music song writer and performer, but he has only made a handful of great songs, Prince is a great song writer, performer and musician, he has made lots and lots of great albums.... you just can't compare those two, imo.

It seems that I have overlook that as his possible meaning. Due to my feeling that Prince is not on the same level also.

Some have taken it as Prince vs George Michael, but the question was George Michael's 'THE BEST OF GEORGE MICHAEL" VS Prince's "THE VERY BEST OF PRINCE".

And as for lots and lots of great albums. That's very debatable.

No, it's not debatable at all. Lots and lots, for me personally, means at least 10, so that would mean Prince has lots and lots of great albums.

George Michael has only done one great album, IMO, and that was Listen Without Prejudice Vol.1.

But, even still, comparing the hits of George Michael to the hits of Prince is a difficult thing to do. They are just too different.

Also, what are we basing this on? Was George Michael's compilation a half-assed mini-retread, released without his consent, like VBOP? And is this "Ladies and Gentlemen, The Best of George Michael" that you're talking about? Because if you put that one up against VBOP, then it wins hands down. But put it up against The Hits/The B-Sides, and it gets its ass kicked all over God's creation.

Well in my opinion Prince has 2, 3 at the most, great albums. 2 or 3 good albums. The others could be looted for their 1 or 2 (if that) good tracks to make 1 good/great LP. and toss in the trash. Which makes this issue debatable.

George Michael's Faith album is just as good if not better than Prince's Best seller. Which I'm almost sure your counting as great.

I couldn't care less about the consent issue. Because a contract is a contract.

the other stuff is opinion.

Well, in MY opinion, Prince has about 10 great albums and they are all better than George Michael's Faith, which is highly overrated. Talk about looting "for their 1 or 2 good tracks," Faith only has three good tracks (Father Figure, One More Try and Kissing A Fool). The remainder of Faith is halfway decent, but hardly propels it to greatness. IMO, Listen Without Prejudice was George Michael's best album.

Prince's "best seller" destroys Faith. George Michael could only dream to do anything as good as Let's Go Crazy, When Doves Cry or Computer Blue, much less the rest of Purple Rain.

They're comparable pieces of work. George Michael is one of our generations' finest songwriters, and much of his best work is showcased on that album. With that said, at Prince's best, nothing moves me like his music. However, with the exception of 'Patience', which doesn't do much for me, George's solo releases have been brilliant.

Unfortunately, that catfight with Sony robbed him of his fire, and probably soured him on the idea of a traditional music career. I think a lot of good music was lost to the public.

As far as what you said about "faith" having only 3 good tracks. You are right about the 3. There only 3 tracks on "faith" that are NOT hits.

And your really reaching when you said "Computer Blue." imo maybe the worst track on the LP.

Ok Fair enough. End of discussion. If Computer Blue is a weak track for you, then there is nothing we can do for you. It is your taste but what a great tune, what a fantastic and electric tune, what a great guitar work.

You probably like Robbie Williams as well. Catchy stuff. Sorry but Diamonds and Pearls does not do it for me. I hate when Prince writes catchy tunes like George Michael. I love him when he makes TRC or Sign O the times or Around the world in a Day. Albums that George Michael could never dream of.

That's a good point. You can imagine Prince doing something like "One More Try," but you could never picture George Michael doing "Endorphinmachine." And that's what separates the two. Prince can do ANYTHING musically. To even try and compare the two, especially with how somber George Michael has been for the last 15 years or more, [Mike Tyson]is just ludicrous.[/Mike Tyson]

I would imagine that George Michael is pretty comfortable in his own skin. Why would he have to duplicate Prince to prove his worth? Michael is a very capable musician in his own right, and has covered quite a bit of musical ground.

And let's, please, kill the idea that Prince has mastered all these different genres of music. We all know he pretty well butchered 'rap' for the better part of six years.
