My Name Is Prince is just perfect! whenever my teenage frens say "who the phuck is prince" or "is he that fag?" i just play them MNIP and it's perfect!
"My name is prince and i am funky My name is prince the one and only i did not come to fuck around 'till i get yo daughter i wont leave this town" it tells them everything they need to know and they say... "hey that's a cool song" etc... and the hip hoppery of the song makes it still popular and fresh today!

It's a cool song, but I find the cheesy early '90s production of many of the 'dance' tracks on D&P & sound a little dated these days. Maybe in another 10 years time it will sound really old-school
I love playing Prince tracks to non fans (I prefer to call them "uninitiated fans" ). Play a really diverse combination of songs like "Sister" then "Condition Of The Heart" then something from the Madhouse albums, then "Positivity" then "Endorphinmachine". It just completely throws them off guard and throws their lame perception of "Prince... that gay guy" out the window. Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

While I cant say I am a fan of hiphop, I think this is one of those Prince songs that never got the recognition it deserved. It really is well crafted and even Tony M sounds great (keeping in mind that I hate rap breaks in good songs). The attiutude of the song is one that we had not heard from Prince. He throws down the gauntlet and reminds everyone how bad he is - it is just fun because you know he isnt as serious about that kind of thing as the underserving rappers that assume that kinf of posture all the time.

If not for the mercy of some almighty deity, that Tony M. rap might still be going on.
As a rapper, Prince makes a great poly-sexual multi-instrumental artist with a penchant for silky, heavily color-coordinated outfits. Okay song but 7 as a first single would have kicked the album off SO much better. All good things they say never last...

Well I love My Name Is Prince. It should have been a bigger hit than it was. I always have to dance when I put the song on. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

A lot of people hate this song (mostly because of Tony) but I love it! Whenever I listen to it, it has to be thumping loud. It puts me in the mood for more Prince funk! It's a great song!

It's a good song to start the album. And the tony M rap isnt so bad. "Man, the living creature, the creating individual, is always more important than any established style or system" - Bruce Lee

You can't deny the beat, but the rap always sounded like a joke to me, and I still think it might be. Maybe not a joke, but Prince creating a ridiculous character based on his worst aspects.
In the video to 7, the evils are being destroyed, and one of those evils is the Prince who sings My Name Is Prince with the chains & gun microphone. The Prince who sings Sacrifice is the real Prince. Check this song out at:

Overall, you speak in terms of "hip-hoppery" "witty and fresh", so I really don't think my responses warrants much thought to them. On top of that, you are trying to influence kids who respond to others as "fags." I really wouldn't/don't bother with things of that nature. But I'll play just for sake of doing it and not incurring your wrath any further: For instance I would play them Peach for many reasons. . [Edited 9/3/05 12:52pm]

i recently found a cd of the Act II concerts from 1993.. and the live version of MNIP is awesome, with that little guitar lick that sounds like kiss or the ext. version of UGTL...
the set list from that show was unreal , btw.. much better than the US setlist where he divided the first and second parts between old and new stuff.....
