The Rainbow Children, new opinions When the Rainbow Children first came out, I listen to it and hated it. It was mainly the voice that drove me mad, also the preachy nature of the album. When I got the Musicology Album I loved it. Fast forward to now, I haven't listened to Musicology in months, whereas Rainbow Children is always on my stereo, it's a really great album.
Has anyone else changed their minds about Rainbow Children. This album made me realise what I love about Prince, a really interesting demanding listen that will keep you occupied for years, none of this watered down 'Musicology' shit. Also has anyone had a change of mind with any of his other albums??

I personally feel its the most challenging album he's ever released, but ultimately one of the most rewarding. Despite a distinct lack of "classic" prince songs, it manages to pull me back time and again.
On first listen all i could hear was that voice. I'd read the early reviews that praised it, calling it the new Lovesexy, and Id built up a lot of excitement for it. I put it in the stereo and i was majorly disappointed. Im not a very good first listener anyway, but with every listen id notice something new, and a new hook would get me, until the point where he went on tour with it, and i was obsessed. Those six months where he released that and One Night Alone were the most rewarding i can remember as a prince fan (Im only 25 and only really discovered him when I was 16/17). As a concept album, to be honest the message isnt 100% clear to me. I get the undertone of it, but the specifics of what he's saying are lost a little (mainly because i cant understand that voice). I do believe if hed recorded the album with his normal spoken voice reading those parts, it would have worked better - but maybe he felt this would have been just too preachy. Looking back i consider this to be up there with his best albums. It is pure Prince. Experimental, creative, controversial, daring - brilliant. What better way to announce himself as prince again.

The ONA tour changed my mind.
I wasn't that big on the album, then after the show, I wanted to listen to it, a lot, and I really enjoyed it, and loved it, from then on.

If he feels he has to give us a message why ram it down our throats, why not let the music do the talking (like he used to)

I'd certainly like to hear a "voiceless" version. Prince has always promoted his faith in his music, much moreso than his contempories, so I kind of feel that this is a natrual progression from albums like Lovesexy.I can honestly say, I've never felt prince was pushing his religion upon me, or preaching even. Its a record, and prince wanted it to speak certain things to people - so they can make up their own mind about them. At a concert I feel it is a different thing, however whenever i hear him speak of his religion at concerts, he is always very respectful of the fact that other people have different beliefs. and never does it in a preachy "you will burn in hell" kind of way.

when i first got grfity bridge i would play we can funk and new power generation, what got me was that i would put the songs on and most of them have intros, so i would think its gonna be a slow song, but lately ive been playing it so much, theres not a song i dont like

Still love it.
Methinks the dreaded 'Darth Vader voice' was inspired partly by Jimi Hendrix's classic 'Third Stone From the Sun', which has similar slowed vocal parts (which I like)and partly by the dozen other Prince tracks a similar voice appears on ... Personally, to me TRC wouldn't be the same without the 'God' voice. It kinda makes me laugh.

I like what he was going for in the organic sound and focus on musicianship, so I really wanted to like it.
I just...can't get into it. It still sounds pretentious and really inconsistent. It has some great gems though, like Family Name, Sensual Everafter, and She Loves Me 4 Me. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Just the fact that TRC did and conyinyes to divide fans opinions so much reveals it to be an album of great substance. For this reason, its up (or down)there with albums such as lovesexy, parade.
