your first prince memory

mine was back in 1987. my parents told me not to listen to "sign 'o' the times" because they said there was some "bad" stuff on it. of course that peaked my interest, so when i had the chance, i would sneak around and listen to the album behind their back to see what the fuss was about.
... "it" is still my favorite p song =) ... the rest was history.

what is your first memory of prince's music?

Vagina

vagina says the first time I saw Prince was on the Midnight Special. I liked the guy playing Guitar but I didn't know who Prince was yet. Then when he was on Solid Gold I died! When I saw him perform Little Red Corvette that was it. I ran out to Alexanders and bought it. Prince was from that day on my HERO!

My first Prince moment was hearing "I Wanna Be Your Lover" on a television series, Different Strokes, when I was about 9 or 10 years old. I think Willis was trying to impress Charlene (a young Janet Jackson) by dancing to the song. And then I heard "Controversy" on the radio and remember liking it a lot (but they didn't play it much). I really didn't take notice of Prince until I saw the videos for "Little Red Corvette" and "1999" on MTV. I begged for the 1999 tape for Christmas '83 and played it constantly (especially the song "Automatic"). I became totally obsessed with him and wanting to be like him throughout the 80s.

Dirty Mind video on an early regular TV video show. I was 12 or 13.

I thought he was a freak! And I was confused with the name Prince.

I knew of Queen, but what, there was now a band called Prince?!!

Ha!

Then, I remember hearing Delirious. Thought he sounded a little like Elvis.

Then, the Little Red Corvette video, but it wasn't until I got promo copies of Purple Rain and Glamorous Life and saw the movie and saw that LIVE video performance (on MTV like every hour!) of Prince and the Revolution's I Would Die 4 U-Baby I'm A Star that just nailed it for me.

His dancing was amazing, the band was totally cool! The Good god's and Linn clap! I really haven't seen anything like that since. It's whatg I always think about when I see acts now. The bar was raised then!

I had heard Wanna be your lover and Controversy but was still a bit on the young side 2 really get in2 Prince as I would eventually do. I mainly remember the videos 4 LRC and 1999. I was living in a shelter 4 abused children at the time and I started wearing the bandana like Dez. I cut up some white cloth and drew the red circle just like his. Well one night I wore it 2 bed and woke up with a red circle on my 4head where the ink had bled through...I guess I was 12 and than I went back and bought Dirty Mind...than I was hooked...Aloha~

i have a very vivid memory of a december in madrid... sitting in a laundromat, waiting for clothes to dry, hard rain pounding the pavement outside. was reading a time magazine review about this guy who liked to dance around onstage in a raincoat & bikini briefs, singing songs about everything from "sleeping w/ his sister to dodging the draft"... kinda blew my 11-year-old mind.

My first memory of Prince was seeing the Purple Rain poster at age 3 in 1984. The girl who used to baby-sit me loved Prince and had that poster (which at the time was huge to me) on her wall, and it scared me! Of course, he doesn't scare me anymore...

I think it was the day I was born. my vision was blurry, but I'm pretty sure it was prince who gave me a spank. he must have been no older than 17. I later heard that spanking me after my birth influenced him to write "soft and wet".

The performance of Electric Chair on the SNL 15th anniversary in 1990. I was 6 or 7 and I thought that song was SO awesome. I begged for the Batman soundtrack for my birthday and that's how the long hard road to nearly obsessed fandom began.smile

Good Morning!

DCM here,

My first recollection of Prince had to be Private Joy, from Controversy in 1982! I thought he was talking about a girl!! It wasnt til later that I learned what he was singing about! Anyway, I Remember that Solid Gold ep as well because Dexy's Midnight Runners were on the same show!! I knew that they were going far!! smile

When I got 1999 I also played "Automatic" to death as well!!
And once again I had no idea what they were talking about til later on!!!

Earliest memory of Prince...being about 10 or 11 years old and recording "Erotic City" off of the radio. During taping, my little sister hurried up and changed the station during the "cherry" part so my parents wouldn't hear.

"1999" video.
I can remember my sister wanting to watch it & I wanted to change the channel. I declared that the video sucked. Needless to say, I changed my mind shortly thereafter.

My very first memory of Prince was watching the video "Controversy". I really didn't know what to make of him. I guess I was a little confused about him and those bikini underwear. I was never thought he was weird though. then I saw "Purple Rain" at the age of 13. Me and my sister sat through the movie three times!!!When we got home my mother was highly upset since we were suppose to be home over two hours before. I was hooked from then on and I don't think the feeling will ever change!!!

My 1st memory is from 1980 or '81. SO I was 6 or 7.

It's of driving to grandparents in N. Minnesota. It was a long drive, so my sister's, who were older, would bring their top loading, single speaker cassette deck so we could have music after the radio went out.

Well, somehow one of them came across Dirty Mind and they'd play it in the back seat, where my mom couldn't reach them. I think most of the lyrics went past my Mom. But, when 'Sister' would come on she'd FREAK OUT. So, one of our trips my sisters kept playing 'Sister' over and over and over and over. I learned the words and was laughing and yelling them out. My mom near had a nervous breakdown, she started crying and pulled the car over... smile
