Yeah, there have been several threads about this song. The reason why, obviously, is cuz the song is so good. I have stated many times before, that for the life of me, I don't know why P didn't release this. The song was rumored to have been included along with some other material in 83 for his "in between" album. The album before Purple Rain and after 1999 that never saw the light of day. Whatever, it should have been on Purple Rain. It's my favorite unreleased cut, along with Moombeam Levels.

Is there a studio recording of this song? The version I have is definitely a live recording (recorded at First Avenue in August 1983,I think).....Prince even says "Wake up Wendy!" at one point lol

Hey DAVIDEYE!!!

I have the rehearsal version on cd. He says "Wake up Wendy." Later on he instructs them, "I say the first Intercourse, I say the first one."

(SORRY LANGBLUE, I didn't see your post.)

I love this song. DOOK and I listened to it on the way back from the INVASION.

It's one of if not my very favorite unreleased songs. If it had been released then the general public would have eaten it up and rightfully so.

It's strange to say but, the fact the so many fans love this song is part of the reason he just won't officially it.It seems that he wants to make us fans happy but not THAT happy. confused

To identify the different outtakes:

There are two rehearsals. During the first rehearsal, the band is basically trying out the song - twice. During the first take, Prince counts in, announces that that is the intro, asks for the mic to be turned up, and then counts in again before the start. Prince starts off singing in falsetto and hardly sings the chorus. In the second take, which follows immediately on he lowers to sing in normal register.

In the second rehearsal, the band has clearly learned the song, although Wendy is instructed to 'wake up', Prince explains that he says the first 'intercourse' during the chorus.

The live version should be obvious.

(I have transcriptions for all versions but not to hand.)
.

So all together there are three versions? Two rehearsals and a live one?

I'm pretty sure I have the live one then.

Sorry about the confusion - in all I count 4 complete run through's of the song circulating:

Rehearsal I (band learning song): 2 performances - one follows on from the other
Rehearsal II (band rehearsing for 1st Avenue concert): 1 performance
First Avenue concert: 1 performance
.

I have the "1st Ave. 8/83" concert where he first does this song. As great as I think it is, it'll never beat The Beautiful Ones. The former isn't as earnest or as dramatic enough as the latter.

That scene would have been more memorable if we were allowed 2 go swimming in the beauty of E.Intercourse rather than getting drowned in the passion of T.B Ones cool

Yes this is the version I have too, but I don't think the sound quality is that great--I feel like I can't really hear the song. Is yours like that too? (Mine is a "real" boot, wink but I couldn't believe how bad the sound is.)

Yes,my version is the same way.Really lousy sound quality mad

not better...but definately better 4 that scene in Purple Rain..

I'd have to disagree with that too. The Beautiful Ones was actually written
with the scene in mind, and fits the mood perfectly. Electric Intercourse
isn't as intense, plus it's a more straightforward love song that lacks the
possessive accusatory climax required for the scene.

I agree,"The Beautiful Ones" works much better in that scene. It's a powerfully dramatic song, especially the second half.It fits perfect in that scene."Electric Intercourse" is a fine song, but not nearly as intense.

The mood 4 that scene is spoilt by TBO as it overpowers the longing and delicate desire The Kid has 4 Apples and turns him in2 a possessive, jealous, 'he's playing with my toy mummy & I want her back' nutter..whilst Electric Intercourse is a beautiful confession from a man 2 a woman he doesn't know on how she makes him feel neutral

Okay, that makes me feel better. That album was the first bootleg I bought and when I heard the sound I felt really stupid; like I had bought some jenky copy of a copy of a copy...
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

What I find odd, is everybody I've ever talked to seems to love either the 1st ave rehearsal or the studio version (which IS circulating, it's a remixed, overdubbed version of that rehearsal) the best, and I think the Live at 1st avenue version shits all over the others. Mainly because P's vocal on the rehearsal is weak, and the whole vibe of that version comes off as exactly what it is, a rehearsal, while the live version, well, need i say more?

The 'studio' version to which you refer - based on the first avenue rehearsal (as opposed to the first avenue performance) - can you advise if it features on a specific CD bootleg please?

Which is exactly why Electric Intercourse is the wrong song for that scene.
The Kid IS supposed to be showing his possessive jealous side at that point.

I've never seen it on any boot cd, but I'm sure someone can correct me on that. I found a great quality mp3 of it online, and I don't wish to say where cuz I don't want to help Prince shut anybody down.

I LOOOOOVE Electric Intercourse. I think I have the live version but not the one with him saying "Wake Up Wendy". I'd like to hear to see how different it is but it's just one of the best unreleased songs I've heard. Prince was truly in a groove in that 1982-1984 period.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that
