Prince and your parents

If any of u started when u were still living with ur parents, what did they think of him? I knew my mom wouldn't approve, so I waited until a few months ago when I turned 18 to start collecting. Anyone have any stories to tell?

My parents didn't really care for Prince and his music. I remember my dad used to call him "priss" and my mom hated that my bedroom was covered with posters and magazine pictures of him. But I did catch my mom trying to sing along to Erotic City one time, even though she didn't know the words to the song.

I'm 20.. My mom thinks he's a "fruit"... One time she said he's probably gay or something like that, and I said no he's not. I said so what if he was, if I was gay would you think differently of me? She says of course not, she's had other gay friends (guys) in the past and they actually liked Prince. She says I'll love you no matter what if you were gay that doesn't matter. I said Mom well I'm not gay you know. She's like well I know, but if you were that's ok. Hahah I said just because I like Prince doesn't mean I'm gay hahah.

After repeated attempts to convince her that he "doesn't suck", I came up with a good one. I know she has only heard a few of his big hits. I've sent her Pop Life, Let's Go Crazy, Erotic City, some others. She'd either not like it or say its ok. I told her that he has so much much and how diverse it was, and how talented he is. We live on opposite sides of the country. She always wants me to send her songs I know she'd like, since she's kind of out of touch with new music now. I do this maybe once a month.

I told her I found an older song she would like, and she said cool. So I told her I would send only a clip, and if she liked it I would send the rest. So I sent her the first 30 seconds of "I'm Yours" over MSN Messenger, and she's like OOOOO I like it send me the rest. Of course the first thirty seconds is right before he starts singing. I sent it to her, then waited bout 15 minutes and asked "did you listen to it?" She said yes 3 times already. I said do you know who it is? She says is it Prince? I said yes.. She goes "You little asshole" hahhahahah.

I think it was because she didn't know it was him at first that made it work. I told her the year it was made, that it was his first album ever, his age at the time, and how he wrote every snippet of music, every word, and played every single instrument on the whole thing only at 19. She says DAMN well ok I give him credit then.

She's into LOTS of music, mainly classic rock, dance, some 80s, and stuff like Enya.

My mom and dad were Prince fans, so it would only be natural that I would soon because one. To tell the truth, if my mom wouldn't have offered me a ticket to see his Musicology tour last year, I don't think I would have been collecting so much stuff for the last year and a half.

My little brother feels like the odd one out when me and my folks talk about P, and he looks with a scorn on his face. He'll learn one day...

My mom has seen Prince in concert 2 out of the 5 times I have. Purple Rain, Adore, the Ladder, TMBGITW and other songs in that vein are some of her favorites not to mention some of the funkier stuff(minus the cursing). My dad was "forced" to see him when I went to see the Lovesexy tour(my mom's a teacher and had to work). The only Prince songs that he's mentioned he's liked are Purple Rain,ICNTTPOYM and Kiss.

U guys have pretty cool parents. I came home once and she looked at some of the songs I had and asked if it was porn. She was quite serious. "Head"? "Sister"? "Horny Toad"? "Jack U Off"? I got enormously pissed at her.

Well, as many of you regulars know, my mom hipped me to P's music in 78 and the rest is history. Overall, my parents are pretty progressive I must say b/c they not only got into P but Jimi Hindrix, and Rick James as well. Pretty much, the philoshphy while growing up was good music is good is good music so, my parents were hip to almost everything in musically. I guess I was lucky that my parents weren't so uptight and square.

My mother HATES Prince. She hates Prince and Bob Dylan. No real reason, just can't stand them (maybe she just hates talent? confused ). But she knows I'm obsessed, so she doesn't make a big deal about it.

My parents, friends, and family think he is gay and can't stand him. I only know one person (I mean personally know them) that loves him. She got me liking Prince.

My mother was the one who got in into Prince in the first place. Besides, I had never needed her approval for any kind of music that I listened to past the age of 13.

I became a Prince fan a few days before my 16th birthday after seeing him at Radio City Music Hall in 83. My parents had no problems with me loving him. I bought all his music and had his posters all over my walls. They would drive me to concerts and my mom even let me sleep outside all night to get tickets to the Purple Rain tour. She even made me a purple satin and lace outfit for the show! To this day my dad thinks it's ok that I am still into Prince (I'm 38 now).

When I was starting to get into Prince in a big way in 92 I bought home the D&P videos with the boy/girl symbol on the front....my mam frekeded when she saw it, because she thought it was (and I qoute) "some kind of satanic symbol" hahahaha!

But they were ok bout it and I know my dad liked telling his workmates and stuff that his son had posters of prince all over his bedroom just to see their reactions - "Is he...er..gay"

I think my whole family likes Prince. If they're not fans, they at least respect him as a great Black musician. I haven't heard a single complaint from anyone yet about him. Even my grandparents like him because he's a very successful African-American musician and has created progress in the plight of the African-American. Or something like that. confuse

But I think my Mother was the one who introduced me to Prince like a parent introducing a child into a new religion. She's probably responsible for why I like the kind of music I like. She understands that Prince makes true art, so I guess she was hipping me to some good music. smile

But I never understood how she let me get away with listening to all of P's dirty talking at an early age. hmmm

My mother didn't feel one way or another about P. But somehow she ended up watching him perform Purple Rain at the American Music Awards in '85 with me, and when it was done, she had tears in her eyes...

Anxiety

On my 13th birthday, my mom bought me all his albums up to Purple Rain.

All on vinyl. drool

Needless to say, there wasn't a problem playing Prince in our house. My mom also took me to the Purple Rain tour and we saw the movie about 5 damn times in the theaters! lol

Back around that time too, my mom always had cassettes of Dirty Mind, Controversy and Purple Rain in the car. For a while, there was really no escape from Prince when you were around our house. lol

My dad HATED Prince, though. Fortunately my parents divorced when I was little, so I was able to just visit my dad and make him crazy with all my Prince shit whenever I'd visit. evillol

i started listening 2 prince...basically on my own....when i was 8ish...my mom had a purple rain cassette that i would sit and listen 2...over and over...but she would only let me listen 2 1 side of it cause she didnt want me listening 2 darlin nikki at the time horny...she was a fan of his when she was a teenager, but had kinda fazed outta him...luckily i met my father not 2 long after i started getting in2 prince...and he still is a fan (sorta anyways)...so when i finally got visitation with him and he found out that i liked prince he introduced me 2 more and more of his music...i also have aunties that still like prince, so i had a lil extra help...and even though my mom didnt so much 'like' prince anymore, she didnt have a problem listening 2 it or letting me listen 2 it...although i had 2 listen 2 songs like darlin nikki on the downlow 4 a while lol
in fact...i got my little sister 2 listen 2 prince...even though her dad doesnt like that...and my mom actually bought my sister a prince cd 4 christmas woot!
