it's just that by adding something like this into the song, people are now not even talking about how good the song is, just their dislike for the lyrics. i don't really have a problem with the lyrics - yes maybe they're not as good as in the original but oh well, its either this or nothing.

Agreed. You can add "The Cross" to the list as well. As far back as I can remember he has injected his spirituality into his recordings and performances. The Purple Rain tour is an example. He was talking to "God" between and during songs throughout the performance. Point is, you may not agree with his beliefs, but he is entitled to sing and write about whatever the hell he wants to.
