I was with my cousins from San Diego today and I asked one of them what their favorite car was and he said "Corvette" so I asked him if he knew the song "Little Red Corvette" and he didn't so I asked him if he had ever heard of Prince and he said no.

Sadly I didn't have that album in the car big grin

(Barring some teenagers here on the org)

If you were a 16 year old with raging hormones, gaining a few freedoms you never had before, wanting to get laid, possibly experiment with some drugs, a 5 foot 3 inch man nearing his fifties talking about good behavior, the perils of the music industry, and how Jehova recued all those poor children from the digital garden, it would be a hard act to sell.

highfive That's right legs. I was into Prince as a kid and even then I knew I was into someone real different and set apart from everyone else. I know one thing, I'm glad I had the sense to "get it".

Suprisingly a lot of young kids digged for old school or their parents music and you can look up the net and they have done articles about it. My younger siblings like Prince and also Michael Jackson and some old 80's electro funk so I guess it is my fault biggrin

So don't lumped all teens together. Yes there going to be some that only like what's now and been like that every generation but there are somes that going to like old school. Take for instance i was twelve when i started to like Prince and also that i like 70s disco and also 80s early rap r&b and disco too. I didn't care for the 90s music at the time but I did appreciated later on though and you should hear the criticism i got of liking music before my time. oh well

hrmph Took, you're the exception and that's great. But, I am not reflecting on opinions of the exceptions but the opinions of the masses of teens out there who are brainwashed with the propaganda that Clear Channel is pumping in their ear. So get your fact straight youngblood and learn from the grown and sexy.

Well, as I've said before , Legs has been a admiring his music since 78'. Now, with that being said, I must point out from day one that I've noticed his music is always been quite complex for some to catch on teens and adults alike (if you're too square you simply won't get it). So, that's why till this day some teenagers don't dig it b/c its for the grown and sexy. His music always has been for the grown and sexy and will continue to be even minus the swear words.

Excellent point Ms. Legs...I got into Prince when I was 17 although I was familiar with his music, considering that I grew up during the 1980s and my older sis played his records. I didn't really "GET" or appreciate Prince's genius until my taste began to mature and I started to have more life experience. I'm 27 now and Prince is one of my all time favs because his music speaks to me on so many levels. I just think his stuff goes over most peoples heads or they will not give it a chance because of his appearance or because his albums are far too eclectic for most people. Thankfully my taste matured and so will many others. But if they don't "get it" who cares, the masses rarely appreciate anything of substance on a DEEP level.

Because teens are really, really stupid and would rather hear some homogenized modern rock than real music. They're philistines. Most of my "friends" never get tired of insulting Prince and I've gotten close to dumping them on numerous occasions.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

Hey it not the total fault of some youth's lack of music history, I really think that they need a US music history in school. I can't believed that they thought Purple Rain came out in the 90s and that Prince is a new artist. WUT? Anyway it gets worst these kids thought that Missy Elliot and Ciera's song was new and Missy created. Oh No way! Cybortron(sp?) done that beat back in 83 when electro funk was popular in certain cities. and when I told my older brother ( and he should known better since he is two years old than me) and younger sister that it wasn't Missy's beat they thought I was lying and even I have to prove to them by play the Cybortron song and you should seen the look on their faces.

They offered it at my high school. biggrin

The course is called The History of Rock and Roll, and has been offered since 1994. It starts off with the roots of rock, what it evolved from, and how it came to be in the early part of the 20th century, then progressively works it's way up thorugh the decades, detailing each important artist, band, and genre. Every year, as something imporant happens in the music world, just a touch more is added to the curriculum. Appropriate movies, interviews, and documentaries are watched. Currently it's a one-semester course, but the teacher is working on convincing the school board to expand it to a full year.

This attitude is not a teenage thing. Lots of older folks find Prince "gay" and don't like his music. He is not as commonly accepted as, say, the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder or The Beatles, even though he combines aspects of all three. If you are a Prince fan, it's just your lot in life to know what the majority of people don't suspect. Prince was never really mainstream -- even when he was having huge hits, he wasn't everybody's cup of tea.

well it shouldnt be. age is irrelevant. the time music came out is irrelevant too. you can get into certain music at any time, and find out the scene at that time, the reasons the music came out, every single factor. you wouldnt tell an art critic that for liking the old masters!

we cant help when were born, we can only try to educate ourselves in whatever ways we feel the need to.
