Did Prince ever release an album without you knowing about it? How/why?

I'm talking after you became a fan.

I don't know what was going on in my life at time (actually I was in a serious relationship), but one day I was walking through Targe' and I see something by Prince down the music aisle. Hmm... looks different. What is it? I pick it up, and it's something called Come. Has a whole list of songs. WHAT?! A whole album? And I knew nothing of it!! Actually, I think it was released a few weeks earlier, but that's the first time since 1999 that a Prince album release ever caught me by surprise. The only thing I knew of Come beforehand was that the word "Come" was featured prominently on the Interactive CD-ROM. I must've been out of the newsgroups for a good year or so... totally missed knowing about it.

How about you? Got a similar story to tell? Did you ever find a Prince album (not bootleg) on the shelf that you didn't know existed beforehand? How did you react, and why do you think it got by you without your knowing? Quit being a fan? Something major happen in your life? You're just not as obsessive as the rest of us? What?

NewPower Soul got past me. I remember I was just casually browsing at a wrecka stow one day and flipping through the Prince CDs, and I found NPS and was all like, "hey, what's all THIS about??" It had been out a couple weeks already, and I had no clue about it. My mind was WAY in another place at the time, and I'd kinda fallen out of favor with all my Prince stuff, though I'd still buy new releases when they came out. It was a weird feeling. I got back on track after that.

The only album that's (sort of) escaped my radar since I became a fan was 'Crystal Ball'.

I was doing my usual Monday music browsing and went into Our Price (remember them? lol ) and - omfg - there was this white box-set with the prince symbol on it. I was, like, "Where the **** has this come from???!". Amazing promotion. neutral

I'd already picked another album up (which I really wanted, probably) but I remember being pretty broke at the time. So I dumped that and went straight home as quickly as I could with Crystal Ball. And I think I spent all I had on it (!). But you know what it's like - sometimes you just gotta have it.

Oliver

I live in a developing country, after having lived in the USA for almost 13 years. Music takes a bit longer 2 get here than there.

So, one day I walked in2 a music shop and saw New Power Soul 4 the 1st time. It make me think: "Damn, I'm out of touch!"

Pretty much same thing happened with me and Newpower Soul (shouldn't it be NS? biggrin ). Wasn't constantly on the internet like now and didn't read the music press any more - just came across the album on the shelves (though I think it had just been released). I was like, what's this? An NPG album with Prince blatantly on the cover? I thought it was some sort of bootleg at first!

2 come to mind.

1st was Come...I was on the outs as a fan because of the whole name change thing. I remember walking through a mall and seeing the display in the music shop. I was like, huh? He put out a new CD? And his name is back to Prince? I bought it immediately, listened to it once and put it back on my shelf until about 95/96 when I was back as a fan (because of Gold Experience). Now I love it...but had no idea it was out at the time.

THEN...

When Crystal Ball came out...again I had NO idea...but I WAS listening to him again...I still don't know how I wasn't aware of it...but I saw a huge display of the album cover in the window of a Musicland in downtown Chicago and almost had a fit right there. I immediatly got off the bus and ran over and bought it. I was kinda disappointed since I thought it was gonna be the original Crystal Ball...but was still happy with it.

I remember also seeing "Come" in the stores and thinking "what is this"

I remember the same thing with "The Vault"

actually until I started surfing the internet a few years back, EVERYTHING slipped past me...

but from 1982-1988..NOTHING slipped past...

I had no idea Exodus had been released until about a year afterwards.
I was strolling thru some mall music store & there it was propped up on top of the cd rack like "You've been looking for me & you didn't even know it!".
I had no idea it had been released overseas. Then I had to carry it around for hours & hours until I got home before I could hear it. That killed me. This all happened in the old days. In the before time.

well I didn't know that goldnigga had actually been released til several years after the fact. Same with Exodus. My ex-wife worked in a record store and I saw it in the import catalog. I ordered it and got it and Emancipation the same day(which was before it came out, i don't remember if it was a day or a week)I liked Emancipation but i loved exodus

aside from those 2, I got every prince album the day they came out or before from ATWIAD till Rave. After that the stores sometimes wouldn't have them. I know it took me 6 months to get NEWS

I never knew about "N.E.W.S." until a friend of mine showed up on my doorstep with a burned CD copy of it for me. When I listened to it, I was glad I had not wasted my money on it. If it had been at least decent, I would have bought the album even after I had a burned copy because I like to have all the original albums. With this album, I didn't care.

Following my disappointment upon hearing Emancipation and letting my UPTOWN subscription lapse shortly after I lost track of what Prince was upto in the very late 90s and early 2000s.

So NPS, The Vault, The very best of, Rave, TRC and NEWS all passed me by when they were released. As, unfortunately, did the early years of npgmc.

I did pick-up copies during my routine search of the Prince CDs in HMV shorlty after in the cases of Rave, TRC and NEWS but I had no idea of their existence until then.

I bought the The Vault in 2003 and I hope [having heard a copy] never to buy NPS.
