For the most part, do you think Prince's controversial look hurt or helped his career in the early days? Explain your reasons.

helped.
it kept him in people's minds so that when he started to blow up, a lot of folks (including myself) were able to say, "hey, it's that WEIRD guy!" i think the way he developed his image in the early days was really effective.

More or less, his controversial glam look added to mystique that we all admire about him. So in essence, it didn't hinder him at all. The only people that have a problem with him in the early days were the religious right, overly conservative ![]() ![]()

His music was at it's very best in the early days and his look got it noticed. If he had looked and acted "normal", he would have gone un-noticed. This was the 1980s and the worst thing you could be back then was "normal". In the 1980s, stars were expected to look and act like "stars". It was a very different era from the boring, average, Wal-Mart, hand-me-down, garage sale look of today. Andy is a four letter word.

it helped get people interested in him
the whole mysterious persona during Purple Rain helped even more but then all of these things started to work against him his high-level of musicianship has gained him all the respect he has now now's the time to really capitalize on that... music for music's sake! [Edited 8/10/05 22:13pm]

When I was younger, I never really noticed or cared about what he was wearin' or what not. It was'nt till I got older, I started 2 say "what the hell is he weain'". I did'nt really care either way though, I liked some of the shit U used 2 wear. Sometimes he'd clash the shit out of some clothes. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

It definately helped. I have 2 say Prince wasn't that original though, as far as the sex funk thang. P-Funk and George. Clinton were on that vibe 4 a long time, not 2 mention the Sex Machine himself, James Brown.
