Symbolism, gender connotations and the most provocative album cover to date. Powerful image. ----- Worst: A mess. Amen. I'm SO witchu on that man Although there is somethign to be said for the SOTT album cover, it has a magical, 'snatched moment' quality. [Edited 8/1/05 7:34am]

Prince's LP covers have all been utter gash since Come.
Pre-Come they were all worthy of some artistic merit but since then they've all had a tacky, sterile and plain dull feel. Emancipation was truly awful - a third-rate cartoon, Crystal Ball looked like it had been done on an spectrum paintbox in an hour-sitting, Rave was pant-wettingly embarrassing (what was he thinking!?) and The Vault/NEWS were lazy and uninspiring while the Gold Experience was basically Diamonds and Pearls in Gold - how fucking poor is that! Chaos and Disorder had at least a tad bit of thought - albeit very literal (the inside imagery in the linear notes was quite dark I suppose) and New Power Soul reprised his 'Gett Off' era without any of the originality. The Rainbow Children at least looked like it had been constructed with some thought and had some kind of parallel to the jazzy feel to the LP. Musicology was probably my least favourite of all though, as its almost like a 'comeback' welcome back to the big time - and the LP artwork is SO non-descript, wishy washy and not even a great image of the great man. Plus the way the sleeve opens and the inner booklet drops out shows how little care and attention has gone into it. However, pre-Come there's been several great covers my top three would be Sign O The Times, 1999 and Dirty Mind - all three iconic and truly original. "Art calls for complete mastery of techniques, developed by reflection within the soul."

I'm surprised I haven't seen "The Rainbow Children" on the lists.
Sorry, I see that Amo84 and Funkster mentioned it. Already been mentioned...twice edit. [Edited 8/1/05 10:09am] I'm firmly planted in denial

I also love the Purple Rain font. I other covers too. I thought Controversy had an awesome covor. I think most of his covers are good, with some exceptions of course. The Rainbow Children cover is the only post-Come sleeve I particularly like, and even then I think it could've been done better. The painting itself is fantastic, but the way it's used slightly skewed on the cover with a great black border down the right hand side is just a bit crap. It would've been far better just to use the whole painting with no border as the cover.

i truly dislike the rainbow children cover, and i'll tell yez why.
i think the package design was ambitious, though i wasn't thrilled with a lot of the font choices - it at least looked as though some thought went into it. i didn't like the cover because i'd seen it around so much. it's a pretty common painting that i've seen in several storeshop windows and frame and print shops. plus, the prince caricature on the disc itself is artwork that i'd seen before in a magazine article. it was something any fan could have done by grabbing a few images from the internet and slapping prince's name on it. i liked the 'hidden' photo of prince on the spine. that was fun. otherwise, it came off as deeply flawed and lazily derivative, despite the effort they tried to put into the overall design.

Prince's best cover was 1999 because it had that P-Funk feel to it and a lot of political statements within it.
His worst was The Gold Experience. Boring as fuck. "But what of black women? . . . I most sincerely doubt if any other race of women could have brought its fineness up through so devilish a fire." -- W.E.B. Du Bois --
