"Purple Rain" #18 on BET's 25 Best Black Movies of the past 25 years from bet.com:

I think I'm the only Black person in the world that hates "Friday". I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Love jones no 8? That movie was OK, but not that good. I didn't realise the love people have for it?
Funny to see "Lean on me" in there. Its been a very long time since I last saw that one. [Edited 7/29/05 17:05pm]

When I seen the advertisement on television I knew Purple Rain was gonna B some where in there. Everytime it comes on I always miss it. Ur right, Purple Rain should have been in the least top 10. That list is kinda crazy. Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

I know pickings are slim for films about black culture (especially in mainstream Hollywood fare), but Soul Food and Love & Basketball? I think the former is a terrible film and I like the latter quite a bit but 3rd best of all time? It kills me that there's no respect for Kasi Lemmons' Eve's Bayou, yet those who voted for this list consider Boomerang to be one of the best. I know it's just a list, but Waiting to Exhale...better than Purple Rain?

Love & Basketball and Love Jones over Purple Rain?? WTF?!?! The list already lost credibility when it had these two plus Friday ahead of PR. None of those movies (and many more on this list) was a phenomena like Purple Rain was. Maybe it had too much "rock" music for BET's tastes, who knows... LOL!

What constitutes as "black movies" in this list?
I know one common definition (for Asian American films, anyway) is essentially for us, by us, starring us. I also like to think that Asian American films deal with or confront issues in the society/community. So given what little I know, I find it odd that Purple Rain made it onto this list. I mean, like, where is the sun?

![]() yeah....Waiting to Exhale is a BETTER movie. I'm sorry. I lovesssss me some Purple Rain...and I do think it should have been in the top 10 but it wasn't necessarily a well made movie. I'm sorry....I lovesssss love jones. kiss my ![]() The list is a little odd. I don't understand how they come up with the list order because love and basketball, as much as it has some weird following, should not have been in the top 10...at all. (my daughter would kill me for saying that. ) I liked Best Man better but I don't think that should have been on the list either. The list seems incomplete. I agree...Eve's Bayou..missing?

Something tells me they did some sort of poll on BET.com.
this is clearly a fans list.

I believe it's because the majority of the film's major or minor characters are black(Prince, Morris Day, Jerome Benton, Clarence Williams III, Billy Sparks, Jill Jones, members of each of the bands) or other minorities and ethnicities (Appolonia Kotero and Olga Karlatos). This particular story could be told with anybody of any ethnicity but the majority of the cast were made up by minorities (predominently black), thus making it a "black movie".
