I think those were good choices, actually, because both are slow in tempo. I would suggest after the student gets a handle of those two songs to move along to P's more uptempo cuts. "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" or "Let's Go Crazy" for example, are both guitar driven cuts. "Let's Go Crazy" is good for a student to learn because it has chords as well as riffs. Many of P's songs are like this, the one's that he wrote on guitar. The more someone gets a handle of playing riffs, the closer u get to becoming a lead guitarist. Purple Rain is not an easy song to learn. I would not suggest Purple Rain right off that bat, lol. That is a song that should earned the right to play after various lessons, lol. You should try something very easy like The Cross, and also sing the song while you play. It is a easy song to sing and play, which is difficult at first. Try little Red Corvette also, which is basically three chords. I disagree with that when you handle riffs, u get closer to becoming a lead. You can't play lead if you have no rhythm, and you can't play riffs with no rhythm. People don't work on rhythm, tone and technique like they used to, they just jump into playing other people's songs. True, u can't play lead or u won't be a good lead guitarist if u can't play rhythm. Hendrix loved Clapton, but wanted to choke him because he felt Clapton couldn't play rhythm. In my opinion, the chords to Purple Rain aren't difficult. Again, what seems "difficult" to some may not be for others. That's the beauty of the guitar. A very good book to get (IMHO) is Chord Chemistry by Ted Greene.
http://www.amazon.com/exe...8?v=glance A sad note this past Saturday I got my copy in the mail and a few hours later I learned we recently lost Ted Greene. Sorry to hear that. Hopefully he'll go over ear training and chordal studies with you. That way it will help you figure out things on your own. Best wishes. Start slow and take it at YOUR pace. | |
