I mean CHORDS, not just lead guitar.

Thanks. wink

Yeah, both of those songs are easy to play. The chords are basic chords, the timing involved is fairly standard. I think those were good choices, actually, because both are slow in tempo. I would suggest after the student gets a handle of those two songs to move along to P's more uptempo cuts. "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" or "Let's Go Crazy" for example, are both guitar driven cuts. "Let's Go Crazy" is good for a student to learn because it has chords as well as riffs. Many of P's songs are like this, the one's that he wrote on guitar. The more someone gets a handle of playing riffs, the closer u get to becoming a lead guitarist.

"I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man", "Little Red Corvette", "Kiss" and even "7" are pretty simple as far as chords go.
These songs can all be played acoustically with only 3 or 4 chords.

I like playin a slower blues type version of Cream (like the MTV special last year) its just E and A with the odd B7th thrown in (capo on 4th or 5th) its pretty simple and its sounds good...plus people know the song if you're playin to a group.
I can't sing, but I got soul

Ask your teacher to show you the chords to the opening song on the Lovesexy CD. The "Rain is wet....." opening.

If you want to rock out, maybe Bambi. It's has chords and some riffs, but it's not that hard to play.

Purple Rain is not an easy song to learn.

I would not suggest Purple Rain right off that bat, lol. That is a song that should earned the right to play after various lessons, lol.

You should try something very easy like The Cross, and also sing the song while you play.

It is a easy song to sing and play, which is difficult at first.

Try little Red Corvette also, which is basically three chords.

I disagree with that when you handle riffs, u get closer to becoming a lead.

You can't play lead if you have no rhythm, and you can't play riffs with no rhythm.

People don't work on rhythm, tone and technique like they used to, they just jump into playing other people's songs.

The first thing I ever taught myself on guitar is When U Were Mine. Not too difficult, fun to play, and those chords form the basis of so many other songs.

The Cross is even easier.

As others have noted, The Cross and When You Were Mine are probably staples that are easy to play and sing along with.

The verse chords of Let's Go Crazy are pretty easy, too.

Purple Rain chords (if adjusted to a different key) can be easy.

I'm assuming you're gonna play these acoustically, so here are the best/easiest/great foundations I've found for acoustic guitar.

Alphabet Street's pretty simple and that little riff is easy. It sounds great played like the Lovesexy version or the Alphabet Street Blues version.

Take Me With U was the first song I ever learned on guitar and it's still my favorite one to play acoustically. It has a lot of cool chord phrasing, and if you learn it, just about everything else after that will seem simple.

Other good songs to learn early are Pop Life, The Ladder and Temptation. While none of them are hard, they do have a lot of chords and really, REALLY great chord progressions. Plus, Pop Life and the Ladder don't have solos, riffs or anything else - they're good to go right out of the box.

Starfish and Coffee is another easy one. Cinnamon Girl is very simple and still quite relevant.

If you really want a fast-paced song, try Baby I'm a Star. It's a blast to play acoustically.

OK, that's all the talking I can take. I gotta go play some guitar!

I have to agree with many others here

"The Cross" is Very simple and fun to play
one of my absolute favorites is "When You Were Mine"

"Alphabet St" is very simple and actually one of the first songs I've played accousticaly by Prince

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Kiss" - basic song as well.

"Strange Relationship" has a pretty basic chord progression.

One I had fun figuring out was "Welcome 2 The Dawn" - 2 chords..but they are variations on A and D.

A few more, "Paisley Park", "Little Red Corvette", "Do Me Baby"..but your more in Flat chords on that, How could I forget "Take Me With U"..thats a blast to play. "With You" is very simple, which is one I would suggest for a learner on piano.

"Purple Rain" is fairly simple as well as far as chord strumming is concerned.

Let us know how your teachings are going.
