What Prince songs really surprised you?

I am talking about, what songs really surprised you, or what songs made you think, 'damn, didn't know he could be this good?'

I'd say the first time I heard Erotic City on the radio. The vocal interplay and the overrall weird vibe blew me away and was refreshing, because at this point, I thought Prince was only a fairly capable song and dance man.

The first time I saw Purple Rain, where he I first heard the songs. Didn't know he had this much rock in him. But, I did think to myself, boy, this guy will never be able to top this. Thankfully, I was wrong. The overrall bizarre, eclectic vibe surprised me, because I thought for sure he would go into a more commercial way. Was surprised that he sold so many albums.

All the bootlegs that I heard for the first time. I listen to these and it is like a kid opening a great Christmas gift. And, it gets me wondering why he didn't release these.

I was surprised that he gabbed so much in Under The Cherry Moon. Thought for sure he was gonna play the esoteric creep again. lol. Was great to see him just make faces and play the clown.

The first time I saw him live, and realized what a great guitar player he was--since he holds back on record. And am always surprised that he has yet to make a great guitar statement on record.
All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

Anxiety

I don't think any Prince song thoroughly kicked my behind like the first time I heard "Let's Go Crazy". I was only 13 at the time, but I grew up in a household that played classic rock music all the time, and no song ever threw me into a frenzy like that song did (though I remember not being able to get enough of the drums in Talking Heads' "Stay Up Late" for some reason lol ). The extended version of "Let's Go Crazy" is still one of my all-time faves.

A couple of songs on the Musicology album surprised me. I did'nt think they were gonna B that good.
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

When I got a hold of the extended cut of "Kiss," I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I wouldn't have thought that he'd be able to stretch that song out in such a funky way. I couldn't get enough of it.
