Not an ethnic group, but gay folks are doing the same damn thing when they use "faggot" and the like to describe themselves.

They should stop using that word too. Kind of silly to freak out when members of the same group keep using it.

speaking as a resident faggot, in my experience we've used that word among ourselves as a way of taking the power of the word back from ignorant homophobes who have been able for far too long to hurl that word at us to make us feel bad about ourselves. when we use it among ourselves, it's a way of saying "it's okay - it's just a stupid word - here, i'm your friend and i'm going to call you this word - didn't hurt, did it?" as a result, the next time some ignorant redneck calls me "faggot", it's all the easier to give 'em a big ol' rolleyes and ignore them.

i'm not saying this is or should be the same way the 'n' word should be used among folks who tend to get this slur hurled at them. i'm just speaking to my experience, since the example came up.

hmm Somebody refresh my shit - when was that? confused

You got me. I exaggerated. He did use the word though. Now he turns around and tsk tsk's others that do. Not to say that he should've been using the N word in the first place, or that it's not good that he grew out of it -but that it's yet another case of Prince pulling the same tired "do as I say, not as I do" bullshit that he's been spouting recently.

Like I said, if he's not using the word anymore, what's the harm in cautioning others? The argument that Prince should keep his mouth shut because he used to say it makes no sense.

Maybe I'm wrong, but in these situations aren't the slurs being used for the same reason?

I much prefered Prince when he was breaking the rules not preaching advice, isnt the whole ethos of popular music about rebelling against your peers?
Now that Prince is older and wiser its cool, but dont expect every young artist to follow your mature views and just ditch the rock,n roll attitude - which includes swearing, alcohol, drugs etc. and ho,s!
