y'know it IS a bit hypcritical, but i do agree with u both. i mean laura ur right. NOONE should be using racial slurs, but @ the same time prince knew the word was negative. theres no way, especially as a blk man, that he could NOT have known. thats why i think its hypocritical for him to be tellin someone else not to use the word. prince hisself knew the word and what came with it, hell he was a 30some odd yr old man when he started using it, he KNEW. but prince stopped using it when HE saw fit. not because he came up on some knowledge or whatever. so yea thats hypocritical, although i don't agree with use of that word ATALL, who is he to be telling someone else not to use it? if he doesn't want to anymore, fine, more power to him. but don't go tellin someone else not to use it, just because prince in his own mind finally relized that its not ok. or whatever realization he came to.

same with the whole sex issue.

Understood and agreed. nod

He used the word LONG before he was thirty-something! I believe the first recorded incident of it was in 1983 on "Cloreen Baconskin", so it's been a part of his vocabulary for probably all of his life.

"brainwashed to dislike ourselves"???
You can only be "brainwashed" if You have a weak mind to begin with,so really, that argument don't hold much water being that Prince always claims to be in complete control of his mind and thoughts.
Prince started using the "N" word predominantley in the mid 90's,when it was considered "slang" and all of the hip hoppers were using it.
I don't think he was "brainwashed" into using the "N" word at all.
I think he was using it to fit in with the younger, rap crowd.
Most of the songs he used that ugly word in were "raps".

Internalized oppression means the oppressor doesn't have to exert any more pressure, because we now do it to ourselves and each other. Divide and conquer works.

"Self-hate" and "internalized racism" are other ways of saying internalized oppression

Dude is human just like anybody else. You grow up and you change. After all P has said he was not always the most mature person and I think using racial slurs and foul language showed us all that he was not mature.

We all make mistakes and no one is above being corrected.

Using foul language doesn't mean someone isn't mature.

True. It's the way you use it. However, I think the "N" word falls into a different category.

This argument makes no sense. Just because someone used to do something wrong means that they can no longer inform others that it's wrong?
If that were the case, would parents be able to give their children any guidance at all? Would recovering drug addicts be able to counsel others regarding the dangers of substance abuse? Regardless of what a person used to do, the fact of the matter is that it's in the past. A person is not a hypocrite if they're no longer participating in that activity. The truth is still the truth, and it doesn't make Prince a hypocrite to make others aware of it. In fact, who better to inform others than someone who used to do it and knows the damage that it causes?[/quote]

The 'N' word is just a word if u take it down to its base denominator, it only becomes offensive when the person who uses it attaches a derogitory vibe to deliver it. I believe that when P uses it he is the postman for various senders (depending on the song) and you as the recipient decide how that impacts on you.

As far as I'm concerned I have never heard P use the word 'N' in an offensive manner. Like most of his lyrics it is up to you to decide for yourself what he is really talking about or indeed what might be his opinion.

For what its worth I think most of the time he is trying to portray the ignorance of those who use the word in a derogitory way by mirroring their actions.

riiight. plain and simple, he used the n bomb cuz it was a trend, as far as "portrayin ignorance, by mirroring actions..." no offense but thats the dumbest shit i ever did hear. thats like justifying why a murderer murders by saying that they wanted to portray the ignorance blah blah blah.

as far as i'm concerned ANY way u use it is negative. whether it be a "what up my nigga!" or a "get outta my face u dirty nigger" type thang

Ignorant 'lacking knowledge or awareness in general' concise English dictionary.

Murder 'Unlawful killing of a person, performed with malice or forethought' concise Englisg dictionary.

Like I said what a strange conclusion to draw, I can just hear a Prosecutor in his closing statement to the jury say 'this was indeed an act of ignorant murder' What the hell does that mean, what are you on?

Do you ever know what your talking about? African-Americans have a long history in this U.S of self hatred. The root cause of this would be brainwashing it really all started during Slavery.

Can you name me another ethnic group that goes around using racist terms i.e nigger to describe themselves on a routine basis and then tries to justify it by saying they have magically transformed the word into something empowering.

Even if other groups did go around using racist epitaphs I doubt they would put in their music, films and other forms of cultural expression so the whole world could join in.

We have been so brainwashed we don't have the common sense to keep somethings in house or just stop.

Yes, P has been brainwashed up until he realized he was still black and WB did not give a rat's ass about him once he ceased to sale a certain amount of records.

You got me. I exaggerated. He did use the word though. Now he turns around and tsk tsk's others that do. Not to say that he should've been using the N word in the first place, or that it's not good that he grew out of it -but that it's yet another case of Prince pulling the same tired "do as I say, not as I do" bullshit that he's been spouting recently.
