"Let's Go Crazy's" Linn beat was THE hook that made me a Prince fan.

My fave Linn patterns, though, would have to be "Dance Electric," "It" and "Big Tall Wall."

I'm curious--how much would it cost to buy a Linn now?

How does the customized version differ from the original version ?

As far as I know the customized has been added with MIDI functionality. The original LinnDrum (not just the LM-1, they are two slightly different machines) didn't have MIDI at first either. A great number of them were modded though.

You can get the LM-2, Linn9000 or the others for quite cheap (I wouldn't pay more than 150$), they were not terribly rare or anything. The same goes for the LinnDrum, but by this point it does have some nostalgia value added to it so some might ask for quite high prices (the LinnDrum is the closest one in sound feel to Prince's LM-1, he actually used both machines I believe[?]). The LM-1 on the other hand is very expensive and only a collector's item. I don't think too many that still work even exist, that machine unfortunately wasn't build to last.

My favorite Linn beats are in the songs:

Jack U Off
Let's Pretend We're Married (just for the reverbed handclap - it is the most erotic sound a drum machine can make)

The drummachine you hear on "Annie Christian" is not a LinnDrum.
I`ll get back to you later and tell you which one it was, cool?
The song "jack you off" has live drums, what you hear is not the Linn drummachine.

The first songs he used the LM-1 are "7779311" and "i don`t wanna leave you" from the Time`s second album. There`s no Linn on the album "Controversy".

There is a prototype Linn on "Private Joy" according to Prince's own words 1997 Musician magazine interview. Whether that was the LM-1 or something of a prototype he had his hands on is another question.

Hey buddy, that i didn`t know, but it sounds very interesting. I have to say that for my ears the sounds you hear on private joy sound different from what he did later on with the machine, and the drums also do not sound like the "naked" linn.I wonder what kind of prototype that was. I`d love to know more about it. Cheers.

Well, the drums that are on "Private Joy" sound EXACTLY like the Linn. That is what the LM-1 sounded like, really. Prince himself seldom used the Linn snare sound as it came out from the box, it was almost without exception heavily altered with effects. He usually pitched it down at least, but he used to add even distortion on it. The sound on "When 2 R In Love" is as far away from the original sound as it gets.

Those machines came out with separate 1/4 jack outputs for each individual drum sound(!), because folks in those days used to believe you had to mix everything at the main mixing console and under no conditions can you have other pieces of equipment with volume controls.
