Sexual Suicide
I see there are some misinterpretations as to what funky is defined as. Some of the songs yall listed don't qualify as funk, unless you're taking the 'vibe' sense of the word and not the 'literal' sense. *Kiss* to me wouldnt qualify as a funk tune. Neither would *Head*, *Space*, *Days of Wild*, *Strange Relationship*, or *America*. "But what of black women? . . . I most sincerely doubt if any other race of women could have brought its fineness up through so devilish a fire." -- W.E.B. Du Bois --

The above mentioned 777-9311. Absolutely the pinnacle of funktitude. Prince got funk-elbow for a week after laying down that jam. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I nominate Alphabet Street. I think it's one of prince's best overall songs period and despite it's reputation as being a lightweight "poppy" hit single, I think the funk is flying at you from all sides of this track.

Funk to me is the sound like Sexy MF or Sexual Suicide = Thick bass poppin', BOOM-BAP drums, James Brown-ish horns, strong guitar riffs. "But what of black women? . . . That's nothing but pure funk! I agree that space and strange relationship are not funk, but the others you named are. Someone listed the ultra UNFUNKY let's pretend we're married. That just crazy.

Alphabet St., at least the album version, is structured on a blues chord progression, but live it's funkier than shit. Weird how he does that sometimes. If he could capture some of what he does live on more of his albums there would be no stopping the man.

That just crazy. *Head* may have some funk elements to it, but *Head* is synth-driven, if you knew funk then you'd know funk isn't synth-driven. Most novices like you make that mistake though, that's why I asked what term of 'funk' are you speaking on. "But what of black women? . . . GoldenGlove said: roanmairin said: You're wrong, "Kiss" is dead funky. Kiss is NOT funkmusic... it is POP. I remember reading an entire article in a guitar magazine fifteen years ago about funk techniques and "Kiss" was the feature song. The writer specialized in funk guitar and was using Kiss as an example of Princes' technique. Kiss, like When Doves Cry, were both popular but they do not fit any pop formula before or after. And if you know anything about the musical structure of a funk song Kiss is a text book example. Listen to nearly any live version when it isn't stripped down as much as the album version.
