Prince songs that sound like other songs

I personally think the ... hmm...sound of "Daddy Pop" sounds a lot (well to an extent) like Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady".

You got it right. And I had never heard that till you said that, but I totally hear it now.

I think Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do sounds like a good four or five very popular songs...

The chorus to "Wherever U Go, Whatever U Do" sounds a lot like
"Waiting For You" by Richard Marx

There's a melody in one of the verses of The Holy River that sounds exactly like the chorus of Lookin' for Love in All the Wrong Places! I couldn't believe Prince let that one go... he must have heard that lame ol' song before! clueless

There's a difference between "sounds like" and sample. Some of these posts are just referencing samples.

I think the guitar solo in "How can I fall" by Breath (from 88 or 89) sounds like purple rain

Prince’s "The One" VS Monster Magnet’s "Bummer"

Same content, different approach.
Both from 1998 ... Who inspired who???

If you’re unfamilliar with Monster Magnet, you know where to find it ...
FIND IT ... this one is great ...
That would be a great duet: Prince with Dave Wyndorf

Indeed!

Sly has been the most important influence to Prince's music ...
even more important than James / George / Curtis / Stevie
But those funkateers also have been a great influence.
I'd especially like to reference to Curtis Mafield's guitar-work.
I hear more Curtis than Santana in P's guitar-work (gladly, because I'm not that amused by Santana)

I wish Prince had listened to some raw rock too ... but he hasn't
At least he could have learned that not all songs need clean and slick guitar-parts .... sometimes a rusty solo or jam does fit a song better

I kinda disagree, I think P's tone strikes a nice balance between clean and dirty, although I can see where you're coming from. It would be nice if P had listened to more of the Stones, The Who, Zep, Sabb, etc...On the Curtis thing, I've always thought that the song Sign O' The Times and the guitar work on it was very Curtis. nod
