DIRTY MIND TOUR BAND APPRECIATION Listened to the N.Y. '81 show and realized I LOVE THIS BAND!
People don't talk about them enough..... and I wish they had done more than one tour. ANDRE CYMONE on bass (the original and still my favorite Prince bass player ever-- I don't know what it is-- I want to say "elasticity" -- is that a word?? His solos are exciting as hell.) LISA on keys (love the spacey Keyboard freak-out at the end of "Sexy Dancer"...) This was the only band that featured Andre and Lisa at the same time. I wish there was more.....

P.S.-- I also think Lisa deserves some appreciation separate from "Wendy and Lisa," because she is a separate person after all Wendy always gets talked about (and I do love Wendy)... but Lisa is so inventive and creative-- I loved when Prince let her solo on the early shows...

Good thread. You're not going to hear about this line-up much, especially on here. This was Prince at his "most Prince". This was when P had compettion in the music industry, so P knew he had to bring it. He was hungry, driven to make it, cuz Warner's at this time was looking sideways at Prince. They were thinking about dropping him from the label, cuz the album "Dirty Mind" wasn't exactly what they wanted, and sales weren't great, to say the least. I saw P in concert, just a year later than this. But had older cousins and friends that had seen him on this and his second tour. Yeah, I have the 81 show as well. This line-up isn't my all-time fave of his. Although Andre is a friend of mine, I prefer Mark Brown. Andre was, like Dez, very essential to Prince. VERY. He depended on them for feedback and ideas. Plus, P knew that they looked great on stage and added to what he was doing visually. If u are going to be runnin' around in panties and leg warmers and shit, u better have some cool looking brothers backing your shit up. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

That band was TIGHT, no doubt....and they really had such a "look"...and props 2 Dez and Andre too.....they seem 2 have been a HUGE influence on Prince...I love EVERYTHING b4 Purple Rain, because there was such a "raw" feeling about everything...there was sooo much 2 prove, there was attitude...it was a great time...just wish I was a little older then, so I could have gone 2 the shows..My parents were NOT letting their 12 year old go see Prince...LOL..oh well...I've made up 4 it since, but..wish I could have seen some of the EARLY days ..LIVE....

You always bring it! This band is My 2nd favorite behind the SOTT/Lovesexy band. But as far as a raw, gritty, funky sound, no one did it better than the Dirty Mind band. The are so overlooked by everyone constantly slobbing the good but not great Revolution. I was blown away when I first listened to the NY 81 shows...I could not believe my ears. Their version of Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad is unbelievable, that damn keyboard hook into the gritty guitar work is amazing. They also funked the HELL out of Dirty Mind. This band contains two of my all time favorite Prince band members, Dr. Fink and Dez, those cats were on point! I have about 5 of their live performances and I love damn near every minute of it. And yes this was Prince at his most PRINCE! [Edited 7/28/05 13:04pm]
