I Love U 2, but not the band? Ok, on tellemarketer blues, you hear P sing the final line and then take time out to point out that he said "Eye Luv U 2, but not the band". Is this a diss @ U2? And if so, whats P's problem with U2? Bono doin a lil 2 much charity work and actually givin the funds over for P? Just a thought.

Unless he's still a little sore from U2's Rattle and Hum(I think it was) beating out SOTT at the Grammies,I'm asume he was just taking a friendly jab at them.

Okay Prince nerds-here's the joke. The audience says "Prince, we love you." Prince says "I love U 2, but not the band." Get it? He means the audience, not the band. It's not that he's talking about U2 one way or another. He's talking to the audience. It's not diss on U2. "New Power slide...."

OK, so he says "I love u 2," to the audience, but then he says, "but not the band" to the audience too? The audience is not a band. Anyways, in the concert he played in Denver he said, "I love U 2, more than I love my band," so there was nothing left to wonder.

All he means is that he means "I love you too." Not, "I love U2". "New Power slide...."

He was being cute and reassuring the crowd that he meant he loves them too, and not that he was saying he loves "U2" the band. It wasn't a diss at U2. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I don't like this topic.
no definite answer. Like I said, Prince didn't say that at our concert, so...

Why don't Prince like his band? *************************************************

It was a dis at the band U2, no doubt aimed at Bono. For obvious reasons. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

It was Prince being funny/clever!
next ya'll will be wondering why Prince wants to kill Valentino If you will, so will I

Nope. Try again. Exactly. He even spent the afternoon in Bono's company whilst in Dublin last, Bono guested on stage with him, and Prince told the audience: "Wasn't that cool of Bono 2 come up and sing for y'all? You're pretty lucky 2 have him, I'll tell u that. He was telling me how special Dublin is, the scenery, the outdoors, the people..." Doesn't sound like any bad blood to me, and I know Bono adores Prince.

If I remember correctly, he told the same joke at the Jacksonville, Florida, show and added. "Y'all didn't get it. See, there's this band U2, so you say to someone 'I love you too, but not the band'." So he's clearly talking about the band U2 and not his own band.
I don't think it's an attack on U2, though. The joke is just a play on words (well, sorta). The Rolling Stones or Sly and the Family Stone could have called themselves U2 instead, and Prince would have told the same joke. It's not an attack on the band U2 or the music they make. It's just a play-on-words joke, nothing more. And come to think of it, if you were to write the lyric "I love you, too" in Princebonics (I love U 2), it could be misread as a reference to the band. Maybe that's where Prince came up with the joke to begin with. "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

Though I'm sure had he left it at, I love U2, all of these conspiracy theorists would be clamoring, "Prince loves U2, they're gonna record together." or "Prince loves U2, are they the new Revolution?"
