Which of the 2 albums do you prefer? Lovesexy for it's religion or The Black Album for its gritty, raw funk?

Between Eye No, Lovesexy,Positivity and Le Grind, Cindy C, Bob George and Rockhard In A Funky Place this was a hard duel for me. I'm gonna have to choose...

Lovesexy. I love the fact that it feels like a unified concept and each track is an important piece of the album's puzzle.

That was the point. There are no seperate tracks. at least that was the original intention. The orginal cd has no tracks.

Hehe, I know . But if it was seperated by tracks it would still feel that way IMO with some phrases being repeated and the sound of each track (The horns and whatnot) and the overall style of drumming. Little things like that.

These albums are like the Bizzaro World of Prince albums. Total opposites of each other. One is dark, raw, dirty, funky, and a little nasty. While the other is bright, cheery, and positive. For some reason I keep thinking of Seinfeld when Elaine meets the bizzaro Jerry, George, and Kramer.

Anyway, I love both of them...can't pick one over the other. SOTT beats both imo, but they are still great.

I've said before, despite being regarded as a 'spiritual, religious' album, Lovesexy only contains a few songs specifically in that vein - Eye No and Anna Stesia. Emancipation has more reference's to God and that's not seen as a 'spiritual' album.

It's seen more as 'spiritual' simply because of the cover with Prince only wearing a cross and because most fans know it was made to replace a 'dark' album.

If the Black album had never existed, and Lovesexy instead had an all black cover, perhaps it would have been called a 'gritty funk' album?! I mean, Anna Stesia, Lovesexy and Dance On are the definition of gritty funk!

I much prefer Lovesexy. It has a concept album feel to it I really like and hopefully will stand the test of time.

From memory best tracks on Black album were bob george, when 2 r in love (on lovesexy also)and probably rock hard in a funky place.

i've heard it suggested that Lovesexy and The Black Album should've been both halves of a double album... but I think they work together well with one being the evil, forbidden cousin of the other. very hard to choose between the two. i'd have to go Lovesexy, because I think, when it comes down to it, love always wins.

Very difficult to choose between two, distinct - but closely connected - albums. I love them both for different reasons. It's like choosing between air or water (!).

Based on which one I listen to most frequently, however - gotta be Lovesexy.

I've said it before & I'll say it again... I've never been a fan of Lovesexy at all. To me it is insipid, uninspired and bland, and marked the downturn in Prince's fortunes. The Black Album wins hands down for me.

It's fair enough you don't like the music on the album - but I really don't know how you can call it bland. A bland album to me is one where all the songs sound the same - you just can't say that the tracks on this album all sound the same.

The downturn in Prince's fortunes actually came straight after Purple Rain - that was a such a peak, that everything was essentially downhill from there. Sign O' The Times, while much loved now, got mixed reviews and didn't sell particularly massively. All Lovesexy did was continue the downward trend - a trend that was really only halted by Diamonds & Pearls, commercially wise.
