Ballad of Dorthy Parker

Is this not one of the BEST songs Prince has ever written? I'm so glad to see he is still preforming it! I read somewhere that this was based on a real life experience when Prince was fighting with Susannah. Don't know if that is true or not but this is one of my favorite songs....I love the storytelling...I love the dark mysterious air about the song! It is a good song to listen to when you are alone and want to think. nod

This is one of my favorite Prince songs(obviously look at my handle lol). Everything is on point and there are no wasted notes! He gives voice to himself and Dorothy, pays homage to Joni Mitchell, narrates a whimsical story, plays one of the greatest basslines of his career, and masters the beat machine all in the space of 4 mins. I love the lack of a high end,the emotions in his voice, the use of background vocals and his synth work. This song is truly amazing and it cannot be fully appreciated until its heard on headphones. This is one of the many songs that illustrate Prince's genius and studio wizardry. It's arguably the best track he's ever created.

Great song. Engrossing story, enjoyable tune, lots of humour and charm. It summarizes what makes SOTT such a wonderful album.

I love the version on the "It Ain't Over" CD. That piano solo at the end is great!

This is one of my very favorites!! The Leno performance of it is drool inducing.
My favorite line is "Right then and there I knew I was through - dorothy parker was cool." It's part of my emale address!
I'm back!!!!!!!

Well, in a subtle way. But sure, it's there. The kind shared between two with chemistry.

I kind of smirk to myself at lines like "Sounds like a real man to me" cause it's a kind of offhand humour that makes this Dorothy person feel charming.

And there's "Instead she pretended she was blind; an affliction brought on by a witch's curse", which I also find casually funny.

It's more cute than laugh out loud hilarious or silly, but it suits the song well.

Words will never be able to express how much I love this song - Moonwalkbjrain and DorothyParkerWasCool have summed it up completely for me.

worship I absolutely adore this song. Genius on a stick.

Four minutes of music that encapsulate everything I love about the lil' guy.

yea and some more funny parts are the pants line and this one "i took another bubble bath with my pants on and all the fightin stoped next time i'll do it sooner", as if to say hey, if i had just let em get to know me and not have em fightin over my goods n shit then maybe there wont be no figting..ding!
very subtle but its there

i like the stupidest smallest things
like when he shouts GO-GO away from the mic
around the time when blackwell is doing that all class drum solo
You saw the apple

But missed the orchid

One of his all time greats. I was at the HOB performance in LA from the Just Another Aftershow disc. He always seems to reinvent it live every time out. He has the ability to do that with every song & make them sound fresh & new, The man's in a league all his own.

Used to really like this song--my first introduction to it was on a mixed cd my ex made me (I think he put it on there b/c my name is Joni). Also, Prince sang it the first time I saw him in concert. Sadly because of the ex I don't really like to listen to it anymore and it usually gets skipped. Too many sad memories. sad
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
