Oh that's easy, I think that he maintained control over his bandmates because of his reputation as a musician. Most musicians are quite honored to be able to work with him and he has gained the respect of the musician community worldwide. His bandmates respect him, his talent, his vision, his creativity. They trust him musically. And like stated before, he is their boss once they join his band. He probably has his quirks, but at the end of the day, it's about the music. It's his show and they know that from jump it's their job to listen to him.

It was said that he pays his band very well. I remember Dez Dickerson saying that he was paid well long after his exit!

altavista said: This is a very interesting question and one that I don't think the orgers are taking in the right way. It’s too easy to say that “they wouldn’t have made it without him.” You can say that about a lot of stars and their bandmates, but the Prince situation is a really extreme one.
Here’s what I think. From the early days when he got his WB contract (remember, he was about 17/18/19 at that time), he was a major diva. There were hella talented kids his age there (Jimmy Jam, etc.), but Prince broke out first and in a major way. He had that contract to hold over everyone's head to make people move in lock-step. Plus, I think he was the most devoted to the music / serious from a teenager (I know they all worked hard, but everyone agrees that Prince to it to another level…. early stages of his legendary workaholism) so folks gave him props. But even then, that doesn't address Unclegrandpa's real question. Back in the day, what people sometimes forget, is that Prince had everyone in check. He wrote ALL of the music, told everyone how to dress, told them exactly how to move. He even told everyone how to sing – I mean note-for-note – especially Morris Day. The most notorious example is The Time, because they were serious-as-cancer musicians. They put up with a lot and I don’t think they really needed to. He actually had folks scared of him. Now that I think about it, I have come across individuals in my life who have the ability to keep everyone in check, and I always wonder what it is that enables people to fall under their spell. As you say, it doesn’t necessarily have to do with the ability to kick someone’s ass , or looks, or talent. It’s a sort of aura. Funnily enough, the people who have this trait are often the shyest and most insecure. Prince has that, plus all of the other shit. They say that thats the basis for psychotic behavior-- people that start cults and such things are said to have this quality-- i remember that random description fr. one of my psych classes... random fact ...maybe... Very good question man, i have been in a few different bands and ive seen all those politics and ego stuff it does amaze me how bands are able to keep going with all that stuff going on.
I really dont know for sure what happened for sho, but these just some thoughts I can only guess that Prince came up with the goods when it counted most, often an artist/bandleader has to win more than just the confidence of his bandmates he has to win confidence of audience, manager, record company, etc So i guess Prince must of been able to do all these things to get that degree of political power amongst his bandmates. Also he was able to promote himself to the record company as an individual artist, all the famous negotiations about him convincing them to let him produce record and have full artistic control etc. I guess he must of been in tight with his management,so i guess his bandmates must of seen him in a kind of senior role and i guess they felt they had a weaker relationship with the management, so they didnt feel they were in positions to challenge him to much i suppose.

Exactly.... i wouldn't have made that association... but ITA... very true. I had never considered that his own band members may have been a little star struck. I just assumed since they got to know him personal up close etc, that it would wear off. But Prince is so good, maybe he is able to musically dazzle them into submission.
