Do you think Annie Christian is a prelude to the album 1999? Ok I was born in 1981 so I wasn't a Prince fan anxiously awaiting the new 1999 album so do you think that when Prince fans got Controvesy the song Annie Christian very much showed what direction Prince was going in for his HUGELY sucessful 1999 album. Annie Christian very much has that cold, synth new wave sound that 1999 was appreciated for.
Even though Annie Christian kinda annoys me I do LOVE that eighties new wave sound that Prince did...I love new wave music in general but Prince had a new wave sound of his own. I find it hard to describe but it just sounds so awsome!

Annie Christian is nothing more than a tribute to that thing which makes everyone evil. That pervasive substance that cuases wars, commits murders, and makes men insane and destructive. Yes, it's about VAGINAS.

Annie Christian is pretty unique in Prince's catalogue. it
isn't as much of a prelude as it is an encore to anything. it simply is what it is, a song that adresses unspeakable evil and the willingness to spend a lifetime running from it instead of ever giving in to it. It's spooky and it's downright fantastic. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I've never really thought about how the music previewed the 1999 sound ... but on a much smaller scale I've always seen Annie Christian as a precursor to the song Lady Cab Driver on the 1999 album... both talk about how negative and overwhelming the world is and both prompt the singer to seek refuge in taxi cabs ... which become a symbol of salvation and a buffer from the world. . . I always see Partyup from Dirty Mind, the real prelude to everything that was on the 1999 album. Partyup really reminds me of the 1999 song alot. Check me out and add me on:

Annie Christian, with its cold, mechanical beat and minimalist, menacing synth lines and stereo effects, certainly announces the sound of 1999, but so does Dirty Mind, the song and there are others as well. But I'd say it's the closest precursor in overall sound. Lyrically, I think it is a precursor of Lady Cab Driver. [Edited 7/23/05 14:01pm]
