Found it on an old VHS collection of mine. Nice budget, nicely shot (for a Prince video). One of the last Prince videos where the budget looked reasonable.

Ha, the intro is funny. Some gangster gives info to Nona Gaye that Prince must be stopped doing "the lovesign". Then the gimmick emerges as some "silly point ur finger like a gun sorta thing"?

Unlike hammers "too legit to quit" hand movement, the "lovesign" never caught on did it? Infact, the video was rarely aired. Shame. Still a cool song

"pop pop pop goes the pistol, bang bang bang goes the gun". Love that line. Best bit of the whole song.

Anyway, Prince sleeps with nona in the video. Giving her the 2 finger lovesign on her lovesign as it were. Or as Prince probley has small hands, he may of used 3 fingers. Thats nothing against nona's lovesign now.

It really sucked.

i didn't mind the video. it was kinda cheesy, but whaddaya expect...didn't ice cube direct it?

prince looked smooth doing his little DJ thing, but there was too much nona and not enough of him. i still don't mind it, though. prolly because i like the song and i'm just happy it didn't look like a stupid screensaver like 'sign 'o' the times' and 'when 2 r in love'.

i'd put it on par with 'morning papers', which i like on lots of levels, though the whole sleeveless flannel shirt/stage dive looked SO desperate to me, even when i saw it for the first time way back when...

i think 'somebody's somebody' is a decent video - it's just a boring-ass song. really, all the videos from 'emancipation' were pretty decent. it was just some of the choices of songs to release as singles/videos that sucked.

I always remember the first time I saw this video - in bloody Woolworths, of all places! I'd had the song a few weeks and was browsing around. I looked up at some screen on the wall and I was, like, It was only because:

(A) Nona Gaye was in there

and

(B) I was lip-reading what Prince was singing

that I realised what it was. I think my shopping went everywhere!

Anyway, cool song/video.

Anxy, I'm surprised you don't like the SOTT video? I know it gets a bit of flak around here but I think the simplicicty TOTALLY suits the song. Otherwise, I can only imagine Prince doing something like 'Earth Song'

I liked it and I liked the song.

It was never properly released as a single, was it? Prince wanted to put it out independently like he did with 'Most Beautiful Girl' but Warners stopped him - didn't want him being successful without them. So the fact it got so much airplay as it did is amazing, really.

Promo singles were put out, though.

I wish there was more info on ICECUBE directing this video. Why this song? Prince is my fave musician as CUBE is my fave rapper so to see them colaberate made my day! Imagine if they had a directors cut or the making of the video!

The Glam Slam in MPLS used to turn their VIP level into an 18+ club after 1am and called it Erotic City. Prince used to hang out there all the time and sometimes perform on the mini stage. One night, the DJ announced that Prince wanted to premier his just-completed video for "Lovesign", directed by Ice Cube. That was the first time I heard the song or saw the video. The crowd went crazy afterwards. And he kept walking through the crowd with his bodyguards, tootsie-pop in mouth, trying to get the ladies attention. That was my first experience being up close to him, after having been a fan for 6-7 years. I'll never forget it.

If you watch lovesign and then the Soul Train appearance the same year, Prince looks like Weaser from 'Revenge of the Nerds'.
It's scientific, its' a fact.
