grade my "initiation" mix CD

As some of you know, I was engaged in a fierce debate with my office mates over the merits of Prince v. Sting (I love both artists) and Prince's greatness in general. Many who are ignorant of Prince simply put him down for his look, his prince name-change, etc. Then my own assistant joined the fray. She claimed that Prince wasn't a great artist at all, in part b/c he reminded her of MJ (wow). I asked her whether she KNEW Prince's music. Of course, the answer was no.

She's probably in her 40s, likes Led Zep, jazz, sixties rock, classical.

So I wanted to give her a sampling of Prince's range as an artist, and to keep it "clean (relatively) and interesting." So I made the following CD.

ATWIAD
Two
Honky Tonk Woman (live)
Cream
Computer Blue
Crazy You
The Question of U
The Ballad of Dorothy Parker
Raspberry Beret
Interactive
1+1+1=3
Shy
5 Women +
Girls and Boys
ICNTTPOYM
Mountains
Venus De Milo
Reflection

What do you think?

Good song selection, but the song order could be changed.

Shouldn't you have one song from his new wave period? "When You Were Mine" perhaps?

That was in there, but I felt it was too risque, perhaps, for her taste. I tried not to include songs that were too overtly sexual.

I'd love to get your thoughts on it and then I'll tell you the reasoning for my song selection.

I don't think it's more risque than "Girls And Boys". If she knows French, she might be offended by that song. razz

Well, I didn't think that far ahead. But hey, the best intentions of mice and men . . .

So far, no complaints!

true. your current tracklist is "clean" enough as it is, it isn't like you've inundated it with all of his smutty stuff. it won't hurt if you add it on.

Well, I was trying to display the range and fluidity and sheer unpredicatability of his work, while incorporating some rock, jazzy, bluesy, and funky sounds one on top of the other, while giving her a taste of some quintessential "Prince" songs (which carry a genre unto themselves). But at the very end I tried to bring it down a little.

No rhyme or reason, or pride of "authorship."

Good points, I guess I need to mind my p's and q's when distributing this to female co-workers. But then again, when they ask for Prince, they should know what they may be getting.

Good advice all.

I don't think there is any way this woman can be open minded towards Prince.

After her comments upon listening to the CD, I think you are right. It wasn't her cup of tea.

But here's the funny thing.

Several more people around the office heard I was making one for her and they wanted a copy and they're enjoying theirs! Then I walked down the hall and heard "Raspberry Beret" on one PC and "Interactive" on another.

Funny!

Wow.
At least by using her as a test bunny you turned on more of your co-workers to Prince.
Now if only they decide to dig deeper they can become easily addicted or have at least a deeper knowledge and appreciation for the man.

I love doing these kinds of tapes. If she could handle Led Zepplin she can handle 'when u were mine'.

I would have left out ATWIAD, interactive, Cream (shaboogiebop?) and Honkey Tonk Woman (live). Hearing artist you're not sure about cover a classic from a well established band is a tough sell.

suggestions
something from lovesexy
maybe adore
Joy in repition

Keep trying. biggrin

Well, with the original recipient being a classic rock fan I wanted to show that P knew how 2 play that. Otherwise I'd agree!

Agreed that IGBABN is a superior song, but I was going for a "cleaner" sound.

SLMFM is not my favorite but I can see why you'd have it there.
