I'd like a show of hands

Who here is a newb and doesn't have all the albums and few or no bootlegs?
[Edited 7/6/05 3:28am]
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

I've been a fan since the 80s and have all the albums and a reasonable collection of bootlegs, but have to say I can't understand the snobby attitude some people have re. newbs not having complete collections. Personally, I find it geeky and childish.

There's nothing wrong with not having all the albums or not being into bootlegs. Myself, I've been around long enough that I have pretty much everything there is to get now, but I don't have a problem with people who havn't caught up yet.

I consider myself a "fan" of Frank Zappa's music, but I've only got seven of his god-knows-how-many albums. But I know what I hear is good!

The fact that someone has heard Prince's music (be it 1 song or 1000 songs) and loved it to the point that they sign up to fan site is enough to be warrented a worthy fan IMO.

So when someone asks a question like "Is Prince gay?" or "Why did Prince change his name to prince?" or "Why did he cancel The Black Album?" or any other question we've all heard a million times, understand that at some stage you probably had to ask some stupid questions too. If anything, I admire newbies innocence - I'd love to go back and hear all those albums for the first time again!

someone can only know one song by prince and love it to death and be more of a fan than someone who owns multiple versions of all his bootlegs, and every import ever released. i truly believe that.

of course, i ain't giving up a bit of my collection. but still... mr.green

I ain't scurred to say it! ME! I consider myself a prince fan and I don't have any bootlegs. I don't have all his albums either. I am working on it though and not to satisfy anyone here but myself. I come here to learn what is out there that I need to discover. The Org is good for that. Besides, the shyt is expensive!

I totally agree.
Prince says my name in one of his songs. In Little Red Corvette, he says, "Liz is on the verge of being obscene" Ha, ha, just kidding. But seriously.

When I first came on this site, I asked if anyone could suggest a good book on Prince and got shot down by some keyboard hardman cause I had never heard of Per Nilsens DMSR book.

So i try and be nice to the new cats

I'm nowhere near being a newb, to Prince or the org, but I have barely any bootlegs and the ones I do have I got from an ex-boyfriend way back in the mid to late 80s, so very often I feel a bit out of the loop when people around here discuss particular bootleg songs or videos.

I have all the albums and released video collections and such though. biggrin

I'm a newb to the org, but certainly NOT a newb to Prince. I don't have all the albums, and no bootlegs. In fact my collection probably looks like I hate P. But one day I discovered the org and I have been reminded of how much I love Prince. So looking at all the posts make me realize that I have a lot of catching up to do.
Damn this kooky love affair....

...better question would be, "Who here is not a newbie but doesn't own most Prince releases or any bootlegs?"

wave

I've been a fan since '83, and I don't have one Prince album, not even Musicology (I gave my copies to friends and family), not a single release in my house. I don't have any posters or pictures on my wall; though I do have one special poster in storage. I don't own any bootlegs. I don't have any of the DVDs or VHS tapes. I don't have any music videos, and I don't own any souvenirs, shirts, buttons, pins, etc. But I do have some of the books, most of those put out by Uptown. If I want to hear his music, I go see him perform live or I visit with a friend. Yeah, I used to have ALL that stuff, but not anymore.

don't hate. reasons xist.

I only own seven Prince albums ("Dirty Mind" through "SOTT"), plus "The Very Best Of" (stop laughing) and that "Possessed: The Rise and Fall of Prince" book.

It's cool that everyone that is a Prince music appreciator doesn't have everything release commercially or via bootleg.

All that should matter is our commonality. Which, is the love of P-man's art.

good point....im my back and fro's with dansa over fandom i've sorta come up with my own definition of what a fan is....

fan: "a fan of an artist admires said artist within their own individual terms"...

i dont have all of prince's albums..ive recieved a lot of boots from folks throughout my wendy and lisa/prince journey's but rarely listen to them...i listen to the heavily influenced wend and lisa revolution tracks more then i would normally because i play them on girlbros. radio....

i dont have anything before 1999..dont have NEWS...Dont have any side projects.....

now, wendy and lisa...i have it all. yet ive only seen them in concert once....and i've seen prince over 15 times now....does that make me less of a wendy and lisa fan? nope...because i define my own fandom....

nobody else.

I have all of the official album ( WB, NPG, etc. ), six boots and access to a site that lists a bunch of boots at a time to listen to one song at a time. I don't have all of the early NPGMC releases, downloads or extra material, so I would never hold it against any New, casual fan or veteran ( thumbs up! ) who doesn't have everything. While it may be possible to have everything ( official, boots, etc. ) in your collection, I think it's a bit obsessive and pointless to try and get everything available, you only have 24 hours in a day, and there's no guarantee that you see tomorrow, so enjoy what you have. cool

I've been a Prince fan for several years, but I've only been on the org for a year. I have about 25 of the official releases (NPG, WB), PR & SOTT dvds, a few LPs and 3 bootlegs. (I just started the bootleg hunt--feel free to orgnote with advice wink). I know it's not really that important to have *everything,* but I get a bit obsessive when I start collecting things...(I'm a gemini) shrug
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

me too, that's why i gave it up... for my own sanity. it's still very tough for me when i see something that i would've really wanted back when i was a collector, but now that i don't have anything, it's not THAT hard to let it go

I have over 100 Prince CD's. All official releases and tons of boots. I have 45's, 12" singles, CD singles, videos, DVD's, associated artists. I'm a bit obsessive in my collecting.
Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for.
