Are there other artists who you expect to be as prolific and omni-present as Prince?

Another question regarding perception and expectation and blah blah blah...

A lot of us on this site (and in the fan community in general) get all grumpy when it's been a while since Prince has offered something new (like, for example, NOW).

I think we can all agree that Prince fans are kind of a spoiled bunch, because the man has been so prolific over the years, and there's always been something new on the horizon to look forward to or to purchase at any given time.

And when periods of time happen upon us when this is not the case, well...some of us get a little ugly. lol

Based on that, I'm curious - are there any other artists who you "expect" to put out new material at a steady clip? I mean, is there anyone peeved that Sade or Kate Bush haven't put anything out recently? Any especially disgruntled Axl Rose fans out there?

And another question, while I'm on the topic...is it more important for an artist to keep fans satiated at all times, regardless of the quality of the output - or should an artist use whatever time it takes to get their new work just right, regardless of whether or not the fans are pounding at the door with torches and pitchforks?

Go!

The sad response is no. No one has come with P's versatility, such a combination of raunchiness and style that would combine to create multiple projects that keep the fans guessing and/or complaining.

Axl Rose is too selfish to ever get anything accomplished-- he hasnt put anything great out since i was a wee lass. Im a senior in college-- that scary ass albino milli vanilli appearance at the MTV awards a couple of years back was an atrocity that eventually amounted to squat. I started liking rock because of Guns...

Velvet Revolver i do like, if they can keep everyone off of the pipe. shrug
WHo knows if thats possible.

i think that's where i stand. bowie said he was gonna be more prolific around the time 'heathen' came out, but it hasn't really been the case. doesn't bother me, though - i'm just all the more rabid when a new album comes out, and in the mean time, i'm gonna buy up all his new re-issues like a damn lemming. lol

Ani DiFranco is releasing at a rate Prince never achieved which unfortunately for her means I have stopped buying. I think it's true that nobody but the extreme hard core want a new double record every three months.

i remember thinking that when pearl jam released all those "bootleg" live CDs. as hardcore of a prince fan as i may be or may have ever been, i don't know if i'd have the money - or the stamina - to keep up with all that output. now, if something like that were released with, say, six or seven releases issued per year, then heck yeah - not only would it be easier for me to manage buying them all, but i'd have time to digest each one as it came out.

i think there was a period in the '90s where i felt like i just couldn't keep up with all that prince was doing and releasing. i don't know if it was a matter of him having too much out there, or if it was just where i was in life at that time, or if it was a combination of the two factors...

I think it's too difficult an act to follow for any artist to be able to put out as much material as Prince has. For anyone to have a chance of reaching that level for a sustained run, said artist would have to:

1) Not need much sleep; 4 hours a nite tops

2) Be able to write/produce music to be able to release at least 1 CD a year for themselves, AND

3) Have time to lend a song or two to 3 or 4 artists a year to use on their CDs

4) Sign and promote new talent, be it singer or a band, and write/produce music for said projects

I like seeing some of the newer artists writing songs for other people to help their careers, or to even find out a new artist has been writng and producing songs for other artists before they even release music for themselves (Jill Scott comes to mind, she produced most of Erykah Badu's early releases).

If anyone is capable of being as prolific as Prince, they have yet to emerge.
Chances are the next Stevie Wonder or Prince may be some unsuspecting toddler playing with a parent/relative's guitar or drum set...

prolific does not equal quality..

and what does

no. shit ain't guaranteed with nobody.

happy happy happy....dont get hung up on the word "expect"...it seems to bring out strong emotions from your end...how about "desire"? or "wish" or "suprised"?

randy newman/john williams/bjork

steven sojourn seems to be on pace...and while ani difranco is much prolific...her last couple albums have worked for me...

cause in the end....isnt that what we all want? music we enjoy? not we as "you and i"? but as in "me".....

i dont give a fuck about people getting all grumpy cause i desire things...

John Frusciante - of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame - recently released 7 albums within a 12 month period.

These were of a consistantly high standard which proves it can be done.

yeah, but could he release 7 albums a year over a 20 year period and have 'em all be high quality...or even adequate?

Hotlegs

Over the years, the only artist that I can think of that has been consistent has been Bowie. Actually, I think Prince has borrowed alot of Bowie ideas over the years b/c lets face it Bowie was a trendsetter and made the blue print for rock artists to follow.

I think Jack White could be as prolific, The white stripes have released 5 albums since 1999, not to mention his Production work for Loretta Lynn, the Von Bondies, The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash and others.

Could anyone do this?

Based on his career thus far with the RHCP and solo - I believe he could certainly release albums / EPs each year of outstanding quality - yes.

For me, I think that R. Kelly is getting there. I mean the man drops an ablum a month it seems.

yeah, but the quality sucks, anyone can release an albulm of crap a year, hell they could release an album of crap a month if they wanted to, the trick is to release good (or at the very least decent) music on a consistent basis.

One artist that is as much (if not more) prolific than Prince & has approached way much more musical genres than Prince is Bill Laswell. If u don't believe me just check the alphabetical discography on this great fan site :
