I'm the exact opposite.
I had a bootleg tape of this before GB came out and played it to death.
Heard the version on the GB album and thought 'What on earth have you done to that song? You've ruined it!'
Same goes for 'I Can't Stop...' and 'Databank'.

That original version of We Can Funk is straight nasty. The bass is frightening!! I still like the GB version, but certainly not as much as the original. The latter sounds to much like George Clinton just added fries and a shake to the original track, if you know what I mean.

Originally called "We Can Fuck" from the 1982 sessions are the bare bones tracks from "We Can Funk" from GB. The 1986 version is actually the remake and it is definetly far superior to the GB version in 1990. The bass and Miko's guitar are classic and the tone of the lyrics are haunting. The 1986 version rules.

I like the '86 version, but at the same time I really can't understand all the flak the released version gets.

You are crazy. This 86 slow funky grind that bleeds in from I can't stop this feeling I got is one of his best unreleased tracks.

We Can Funk the original version is 100 million times better than the crappy GB version.

the GB version is so lame sometimes i think that he ruined it on purpose for some reason.

I like em both for different reasons, but I gotta say, I prefer the GB version because of it's climax and and the george clinton sub song "I'm testin' postiive for the funk"

The one I got back in 1989 was on a booteg called chocolate box It was a whole complete album Prince didn't release.

Chocolate Box

Sign of the Times outtakes. Different versions of some of these have later been released.
The source material is not really very good and some of it is poor and distorted.

1. Moviestar
2. Heaven
3. Starfish & Coffee
4. Ballad of Dorothy Parker
5. Joy In Repitition
6. Pretty Face (This is really called data bank)
7. Girl Of My Dreams
8. I Can't Stop
9. We Can Fall (This is really called We can funk)
10. All Day All Night (this is where they get the title chocolate box, but he's really saying purple fox in this song.)

You don't? Strange. Could it be because the '86 version is more personal and dark, and the GB version is more Muppetized and technicolor? And don't even say you can't envision a group of Muppets singing that "Uh-oh uh-oh" part.

The GB version is a pale pale shadow of the original. Once you reduce a song to including lyrics like, "I'll gladly pee in anybody's cup," it becomes a joke.

There are several versions of this outtake circulating, and some have the wrong speed, i.e they´re either a bit too slow or sped up.
Have you ever heard the version on the Dream Factory bootleg in excellent quality ? Maybe you should check that one out.
I don´t like the GB version, but the 1986 version is one of my favorite songs.

I read somewhere that it was also one of Chick Huntsberry´s favorite songs.
