Did you ever NOT like Prince? I became a Prince fan in 1984, but a few years before that, when my older sister was into Prince, I really thought he was a complete freak. And I just couldn't get into him at all.
I recall a summer in the early '80s, when my sister and our cousin were playing Controversy ALL SUMMER LONG, and it drove me crazy. "Annie Christian, Annie Christ, until you're crucified..." WTF? I just didn't get it. Of course, a few years later, I would be riding in a car with my friends, and hear the beginning of a song that would change my life forever. Looking back on it, I find it kinda funny that there was a time I actually didn't like Prince. Anyone else actually not like Prince before they started liking Prince?

Looking back on it, I find it kinda funny that there was a time I actually didn't like Prince. Anyone else actually not like Prince before they started liking Prince? The first time I ever heard of Prince was when "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was all over the radio. It was annoyingly all over the radio and I thought it sounded a bit too much like a Ray Parker Jr & Raydio rip-off. Then the video was shown on some local station's half hour video program (waaaay before MTV) and I was totally grossed out by how effeminate he was, flouncing around with a his Farrah-styled hair and that weird scarf dancing he was doing. I totally ignored that he was shown playing all the instruments and just assumed it wasn't true. I avoided that song like the plague for years. Then in 1981, I was flipping through the am radio dial and heard a snippet of something that knocked me out - a sonic attack like nothing I had ever heard before and a vocal that sounded like it was from the future. I waited for the end and the DJ announced the song...it was "Controversy" by Prince. I bought the single immediately. The first full Prince lp I listened to was "1999", which I checked out from the library and returned the next day. I bought the single "1999" and I had to watch the "Little Red Corvette" video everytime MTV showed it, but I never bought a Prince album until "Purple Rain". I've been buying his albums on the first day of release ever since.... [Edited 7/1/05 11:02am]

TheBigBang said: Anyone else actually not like Prince before they started liking Prince? Not me! I was hooked by the time he finished the Lord's Prayer in Controversy. Controversy was the first song of his I heard. Been drunk on the Purple Liquor ever since. CALL ME A DREAMER 2!

As I said before, Prince put the P in Pussy so how can I not like him. More or less, whatever he experiments on, I just let him do his thing until he gets his head on straight and back on track. [Edited 7/2/05 1:55am]

yeah, till my about 16th birthday I hated him. Than the hate turned to love. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really donĀ“t like the idea that he could have it all."

I've *always* liked Prince, but for a space of almost ten years, basically most of the 90s, I didn't like how he and his music made me feel so I took a break from him.

I have always try to understand him, but since 2000 he make it very hard for me!

Yes, I used to think his songs were annoying. Thank god I wised up! Prince says my name in one of his songs. In Little Red Corvette, he says, "Liz is on the verge of being obscene" Ha, ha, just kidding. But seriously.

Apart for downsizing on the amount of synthesizers in his music these days, I already liked/respected Prince as a recording artist that already does EXACTLY whatever the hell he wanted to do in his music. Twice. It was during the height of the Purple Rain days and I had a copy of "Right On" Magazine and Prince was on the cover as usual then. I got mad and ripped it up because I got tired of seeing Prince everywhere and I wanted to hear more about Michael Jackson LOL. I was ticked for a while, probably a couple of months then I got over it when I watched him on the AMA's in 85. I almost stopped being a fan when I was hearing about him suing the websites over the symbol in 99. I thought it was a horrible thing he was doing but later on I understood his point. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

I always kind of "liked" Prince. But I didn't get really into him until probably a year or two ago. It's really funny because my mom was talking about how hot she thought he was, and i was like Ewwwww, no he isn't. I told her that I loved his music and always would but I would never think he was hot. About two weeks later I thought he was the hottest guy in the world and I still do!!!!

Couldnt really get into him during the whole "Gangsta Glam" period..... "Put a glide in your stride, and a dip in your hip, and come on to the mothership"

Didn't have any interest in him until 85. All my friends were rocking out to "When Doves Cry" and I just didn't get it. I was 12, heavily into Duran Duran and Wham! and when everyone else was out at the theaters catching "Purple Rain" I was almost completely oblivious to the whole phonemenon. I actually made fun of him when he went up to accept that AMA or Grammy with Chick and then really made fun of him when he had that purple cape/hood at the Oscars. Why did evrybody like this dude...I just couldn't figure it out.
Then I happened to hear my sister playing "Let's Pretend We're Married" one night and I heard the artful way that P used the F word. I borrowed the tape from my sister, listened at first to that song over and over. Then I started playing the whole CD at that was it. I was hooked. All good things they say never last...

Ditto... I took a break from him during most of that time period also, now I feel like I'm playing "catch up" with an old friend. Damn this kooky love affair....

There have been plenty of times that he has disappointed the hell out of me but there has never been a time that I didn't like him. Andy is a four letter word.
