1999:TNM by Prince AND THE REVOLUTION???? Somebody please explain why 1999:The New Master was released by Prince & The Revolution.
I can understand the Prince part (simply for commercialism), but the Revolution? The Revolution wasn't even credited on the original (yes, I know 'and the Revolution' is written backwards on the album cover, but nowhere else are they mentioned). And very few members even played on the song. Let's look at who's on 1999:TNM - (not even 'Prince'), Larry Graham, Rosie Gaines and Doug E. Fresh. Kirky J. isn't credited, but even so, this is defintely an NPG line-up. Where are Dr. Fink, or Wendy & Lisa? Why defame the name of the Revolution with this awful remix set? Yeah, I know it was 3 years ago. I guess I can get over it now...

Yeah, get over it. Now. "You don't frighten us, English pig dogs. Go and boil your bottoms, sons of a silly person."

Okay, it's pretty simple... 1999 was written by Prince and the Revolution right? The New Master is just a remix, therefore the credit is still given to the original writers.
(Looking for 1999 CD to confirm simple solution) Okay... of course on the original CD it's credited to Prince only! LOL Okay, that really doesn't make sense now. Maybe he just felt bad about not giving them credit way back when? Here's MY question... Do any of the original band get money because he have the band writing credit? PeaceNluv, ChrisG

The only co-credit for 1999 goes to Lisa Coleman, Jill Jones and Dez Dickerson for co-lead vocals. The New Master is just a remix. No it isn't. Prince has re-recorded the song and he has involved different people. The whole point of the title 'The New Master' is that he doesn't own the original master and therefore has has had to re-record the song - hence it is not 'just a remix' of the old master recording. Therefore the credit is still given to the original writers. No - see above.(Looking for 1999 CD to confirm simple solution) When you find it, you'll discover it isn't a solution Okay... of course on the original CD it's credited to Prince only! But why should he credit them if they didn't write it?Here's MY question... Do any of the original band get money because he have the band writing credit? Simple solution - if they didn't write it, and therefore don't get credited for writing it - they don't get song writing royalties.
There is more than one solution to this, I think. Bear in mind that Prince's releases, recordings of his songs by other artists, and credits at ASCAP sometimes bear contradictory details about who wrote the songs. Sometimes this has been deliberately misleading e.g. credits on Sheila E's first album; sometimes it is less clear that it has been deliberate, and possibly has just been inconsistent crediting using different pseudonyms. So it's possibly just a mistake. ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

Yep - I think Chris was referring to them being credited for having written the song - or even for having performed it. The reference to 'The Revolution' is hardly a 'credit'. The album is usually marked on the spine and disc as being a Prince release.ALT+PLS+RTN: Pure as a pane of ice. It's a gift.

I would say that Prince is simply reclaiming his most famous pseudonym, one that has wrongly become associated with his most famous front band.
(Yes, that is all Lisa & Wendy, Brownmark, Dr. Fink, and Bobby Z were -- a group of players to help fullfill the vision that Prince had. I would also wager that once the relationship changed from one of their depending upon him to a more collaborative effort it spelled their doom. There couldn't be any REVOLUTION, that would mean a lessening of Prince, right?) I don't think that there ever was an entity called the "Revolution" per se in the mind of Prince. And I'm sure that the "Revolution" were NOT voting members in that band. Anyone seriously think of the latest incarnation "Prince & The New Power Generation" as anything other than Prince? I don't... look at the band that is now accompanying him on the ONA tour -- totally different on all instruments save for Prince. Our boy is the straw that makes this mixtures work, and his calling the 1999: The New Master a Prince & The Revolution project could symbolize anything up to and including his fullfilling a promise of "new" Prince & The Revolution work being released. Arguably, you could say that represents Prince & The New Power Generation, but no one is associating all of the various players that have worked with Prince with that infamous moniker, are they? He was a bit more successful in marketing the latest names and tying them into himself. La, la, la
