There are a few extended versions.

I hope and pray 2 God that U R talking about what is referred 2 as "The Hallway Version", with the different corridors being named "Lust", "Insecurity" (dope vocal effect), "Hate", etc...

Oh... not 2 mention the blazin' guitar.

Each hallway has an emotion...

Also, there's a version with Wendy saying, "Chauvanistic Computer... Narrow-minded Computer..." etc.

This version clocks in at 12:27.

Hit me!

Hay! I'm reading those lyrics, and whaddyaknow!? I HAVE THIS VERSION on Cassette. A dude gave it to me with a tape of the black album - waaay back in 88 or 89. I pulled out the cassette a few weeks ago and was thinking, "damn!? I wonder who all has this version of this tune?"

And no, I haven't converted it to mp3, and no, I wont mail you a copy of this thing.

I GOT ICE CREAM AND YOU GOT NONE!

This cassette also contains the original version of Nikki, The Beautiful Ones, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star, (probably taken from the videotape, i'm guessing) and some other stuff.

BUT I've never heard (nor heard about) any sort of demos for When Doves Cry. Anybody know about this? Wasn't there bass on that song at one point?

NEWSFLASH! If you have this on tape, circa '88 or '89, it's not DIGITAL. I have a hissed-out version of the Hallway Speech on cassette, and an excellent version of the Hallway Speech on CD, but neither of them are digital, which I'm assuming would be the absolute best version available.

I dont give a shit if it's the smoke-signal version, I have it.

Damn, damn, damn - this song is worship I've said it before: how on earth does Prince sit on jams like this? Unbelievable. disbelief

For once, Prince wasn't to blame here.

Whether he had chosen to release it or not the fact remains that the master of the so-called "hallway speech" version was stolen from the WB vault by a sound engineer who has now been sitting on the track for twenty years.

It is now semi-circulating amongst a tightly knit community.

Blame security.

Hi Giotto, yeah - I've got a copy of it. lurking What I find incredible is that P can actually sit on tracks like this, Wonderful Ass, In A large Room, Purple Music, the list goes on and on... Other artists would rush-release these knowing how amazing they are. Prince, on the other hand, leaves them in the vault! shrug He's a funny little fella.

I agree with you.

I think P has to some extent attempted to do just what you propose and probably began to test the waters of that idea, as far back as '96 and '97. His ill-fated Crystal Ball project comes to mind.

However, as with most Prince "experiments", it ended up being handled in the most cack-handed way possible by the fella, whether directly or indirectly, and is now widely perceived as just another blot in Prince's career by the majority of Prince fans, as opposed to the triumphant idea of Crystal Ball being the first of a series of releases featuring stuff like "In A Large Room...", "Traffic Jam", "Purple Music", etc, which would have benefitted everybody in the long run.

I therefore doubt that releasing previously vetoed material figures foremost in P's mind, especially after the Crystal Ball debacle. Which is a shame really, given the amount of high quality music languishing in his vault.

I just did a search of my music on my computer and I came up with 14 "Computer Blue" mp3s ranging in length from 3:43 to 12:29 Giotto said there is a version that is nearly 14 minutes in length...how is that different from the 12 1/2 minute version (hallway speech)?

Due to the simple reason that the circulating version is slightly speeded up and slightly edited.

Hence the time estimate is shorter than it really ought to be.
