Computer Blue....DAYUM

I just heard the extended version for the first. D-A-Y-U-M...CLASSIC Prince material there...I see now why others would always compain that it was shortened. MUCH to be heard there. It's quite Groovealicious, funky, scary, danceable...all at the same time!

This version made me love the song even more. I never thought of it as scary but it is. Great stuff.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

just shows how stupid Warner Bros was for not getting this out in some form
this woulda made an awesome video -- a la Guns'N'Roses-style
the full-length song is totally mind-blowing

There are a few extended versions.

I hope and pray 2 God that U R talking about what is referred 2 as "The Hallway Version", with the different corridors being named "Lust", "Insecurity" (dope vocal effect), "Hate", etc...

Oh... not 2 mention the blazin' guitar.

Each hallway has an emotion...

Also, there's a version with Wendy saying, "Chauvanistic Computer... Narrow-minded Computer..." etc.

This version clocks in at 12:27.

Hit me!

I was just watching my tape from the Purple Rain tour in 85. This song is one of the amazing things about that video. I really hate that it didn't officially see the light of day.

EXTENDED LYRICS:
He didn't like living alone
The house where he lived had many hallways
It was a long walk 2 his bedroom
Because 2 him each hallway represented an emotion
Every one vastly different from the next
One day while she was with him
He decided 2 name each one
She walked by his side, one hand on his thigh
No - she was sort of half a step behind him
Yeah, the grip on his thigh intensified
As they walked slowly through the corridor
He named the hallway "Lust"
And as they passed through the next one
He named it "Fear"
The grip she now loosened
So he walked faster
Her hands now trembling
She let dropped 2 her side as he wrote the word "Insecurity"
He looked into her eyes and smiled a demon smile
And quickly walked onto the next
Corridor after corridor
He named almost all when suddenly… he stopped
He picked up the word "Hate"
She was gone
So he picked up another – "Pain"

On the verge of a breakdown
What is life without love?
It's hell Computer Blue!

Father, Father, the sun is gone
(Father, Father) The Dawn, the Dawn
Father, Father, where is the Dawn?
(Where is the Dawn, Father?)
(Na, na, na, na, na) {x2}
Na, na, na, na, na

Shall I go 2 church on Sundays?
Shall I stay home and pray?
Shall I try 2 make her happy?
Shall I try 2 make her stay?

Where is my love life?
Tell me, where can it be?

Narrow-minded computer
(Somebody please, please tell me…)
It's time someone programmed U
(Somebody please, please tell me what's wrong with me)
It's time U learned women are not butterflies
They're computers 2
Just like U Computer Blue
(Where is my baby?)
Chauvinistic computer
It's time someone programmed U (Na, na, na, na, na)
U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon
And take 4 granted the feeling's mutual
(The feeling's mutual!)
We're computers 2
Just like U Computer Blue
"He's a musician's musician..."

There is a digital "Hallway Speech" version that has been shared amongst a select few.

It is absolutely awesome. Like hearing a completely different song.

The Computer Blue extended version is an example of a Prince tour de force.
Classic song on a classic album.

Yeah, well I got two middle fingers saluting those select few.

I keep hearing that Eddie Murphy routine. "I got some ice cream. I got some ice cream. And you don't got none."

The extended version is incredible. I let a casual Prince fan hear it once and she couldn't believe it was real. I told her that it was cut down to make room for When Doves Cry(right? I hope), but that it should have been released somehow, someway.

I may be wrong but I think 'Computer Blue' was edited to include 'Take Me With U'.

Damn, damn, damn - this song is worship I've said it before: how on earth does Prince sit on jams like this? Unbelievable. disbelief

Poor lonely computer
It's time someone programmed U
It's time U learned love and lust
They both have 4 letters
But they're entirely different words
Poor lonely computer
Poor, poor lonely computer
Do U really know what love is?

Hay! I'm reading those lyrics, and whaddyaknow!? I HAVE THIS VERSION on Cassette. A dude gave it to me with a tape of the black album - waaay back in 88 or 89. I pulled out the cassette a few weeks ago and was thinking, "damn!? I wonder who all has this version of this tune?"

And no, I haven't converted it to mp3, and no, I wont mail you a copy of this thing.

I GOT ICE CREAM AND YOU GOT NONE!

This cassette also contains the original version of Nikki, The Beautiful Ones, I Would Die 4 U, Baby I'm A Star, (probably taken from the videotape, i'm guessing) and some other stuff.

BUT I've never heard (nor heard about) any sort of demos for When Doves Cry. Anybody know about this? Wasn't there bass on that song at one point?

Sounds like they're both saying it. There's two voices and they're different voices.

So let me get this straight: There's an edited "Computer Blue", an extended "Computer Blue", and a digital, "hallway" "Computer Blue"? Anything else?

The one I heard was the extended and it was worship.

01- There is a St. Louis Park Warehouse version, a rough demo and the earliest version of "Computer Blue", which lasts for nearly 14 minutes and features very raw, awesome guitar, complete with feedback at the very end.

02- Then there is an early studio mixdown of "Computer Blue", the first version from Sunset Sound Studio, which is mostly instrumental and served as a template for the third version.

03- This was reworked and turned into the so-called "hallway speech" version, which as far as I know is everyone's favourite. This one is defintely the most interesting, both musically and lyrically. This version is nearly 14 minutes in length.

04- Last but not least there is another Sunset Sound version, basically the same reworked version which was edited down for inclusion on the original pressing of the Purple Rain album. It lasts for around 8 minutes.

I hope that helps dispel some of the confusion.

Pagey

Just listened to the hallway speech version for the 1st time in awhile after reading this thread. It's a shame he doesn't release this. It is positively electrifying. Is this possibly the best thing we've heard that he hasn't offically released?

As a side note...I remember back in about 93/94, when I was on the outs as a fan of Prince (after the name change and Come I really thought the guy was done), someone sent me a tape of Gold Experience songs and tacked this version at the end...it offically brought me back as a fan. That tape defintely got a work out.

NEWSFLASH! If you have this on tape, circa '88 or '89, it's not DIGITAL. I have a hissed-out version of the Hallway Speech on cassette, and an excellent version of the Hallway Speech on CD, but neither of them are digital, which I'm assuming would be the absolute best version available.
