Thoughts On The Black Album. Please, Everyone Tell Me What You Think! I want to know everyone's analysis on this album before I buy it.

It's a tight, fun, funky album with a quirky sense of humour and a lot of attitude.
It's nothing mind blowing though. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Now that it's legit, it's a'ight. Fess up, you still get a flash of that feeling of what it was like to own one of the most circulated bootlegs in history 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

It is a mindless fun funk album that has a few good tracks (Le Grind, Cindy C, Rock Hard In A Funky Place) of which that last one is one of the remainders od the cancelled Camille album.
2 Nigs United For West Compton is also a track that Prince actually reowrked for his 2002 One Night Alone tour, even if it was only aired during aftershows, if I am correct. It has a few duds, like Dead On It, but even that is fun. It has Prince looking down on rappers. I wish he could have kept that opinion when it came to a certain Tony M. The original of the NPGmc download of the 1987 live tour try out of Strange Relationship even has parts of Superfunkycalifragisexy, but of course, Prince edited it out. How typical.

What?! I LOVE Dead On It. That song is so goddamn fun. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

My friend put it on without telling me what it was, too. I remember I didn't even guess it was Prince until Cindy C.
It's the first Prince album where the performances were maybe more important than the songwriting itself. So stuff like Le Grind has got to grow on you. It was kind of funner to listen to it through the tape to tape bootleg haze. That added to the naughtiness, especially hearing it after Lovesexy. Lovesexy's evil twin. Check this song out at:

There is no acounting for personal taste. At the time, being a Def Jam jacket wearing kid, I thought the dissing of rap was rather silly. To me, Dead On It is kind of the weak link on the album.

Lovesexy's evil twin.[/quote] Yeah thats how I see it. Lovesexy is multi-layered, multi tracked, very over produced most the time. Black album is raw as fuck pretty much. "dead on it" is just him and a beatbox. Love that cut. "le grind" and "cindy c" are both funny, very funky and sexy! Love them 3 tracks. I love it on "cindy c" when Prince gets all creepy with cat..... "dont u wanna play with me?" "errr yes, no.....". etc. Prince is so funny sometimes.

Noteworthy; the bass-voice intro on Le Grind;
So, U found me Good, I'm glad This is Prince - the cool of cools Some of U may not know this, but some of U may know Some of U may not want 2 know We are here 2 give U service Please don't try 2 stop us 4 we come regardless 4 we are as strong as we are intelligent So come vibe with us Funk Bible - the New Testament And the ending of the album; after Rock Hard, Prince's voice returns to complain "What kind of fuck ending was that?" I love that shit. I miss that teasing in his work of late.

PURE PRINCE Like "diamonds and pearls" is so so early 90's pop, then bam, "strollin'" comes blasting in on its own merry, silly lil' tune. I love strollin'". Love the guitar picking by Levi.

always loved this project, a musician Friend gave it 2 B not long after it....came out/leaked, whatever...it gave a view of his personality ya might only get from hangin with him...it didn't seem 2 have all the 'commercial correctness' going on that other projects @ that time were so infused with (over production-veiled messages)it was hilarious hearing him go off like that; perhaps that Y he didn't want folks buying it~conflicting with 'public image' & all...as far as how he can B day2day; the Black album would B "dead on it"

One of my absolute favorite albums by P, and its only getting better with age. Its definitely a grower...I really didn't like all that much when I heard an old booted version back in 88. But that tape got played more and more (as well as copied constantly) and when it was finally officially released in the early 90's it rose to my top 10 if not top 5. Fun, funky, raw, and pure Prince. Someone said "Lovesexy's evil twin"...a perfect comparison.

Buy it...if for no other reason than the fact that "Bob George" kicks a** "I would say that Prince's top thirty percent is great. Of that thirty percent, I'll bet the public has heard twenty percent of it." - Susan Rogers, "Hunting for Prince's Vault", BBC, 2015
