Bought "The Black Album" today...

Havent listened to it yet, but Ive heard its hard to get. bought it for 18 bucks used at sonic boom...

thought it was funny when the guy at the counter warned me "this isn't the Jay-z album you know", I laughed and said "Really? oh well, i think ill buy it anyway..."

Im going to give it the whole lights/phone off experience tommorow afternoon, amd im really excited for the fact this is the first P album i bought without being familiar with a single track...

Ill report my findings in the next week or so. Any heads up on songs to pay extra attention too?

thanks,

'bob george' has always been my favorite from this album, but the whole thing is great fun to listen to. it's not one of my most favorite prince albums, but it's one that i can listen to from beginning to end, and when i'm in the mood for it, i really really enjoy it.

LOL when something is considered great in geek land they use the term "that owns" / ie "thats great/awesome".

Some bright spark miss-splet it as "pwns" and its stuck!

Well, u've probably heard When 2 R N Love. My favs are...nevermind, the only ones I don't care too much for are 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton and ROckhard N a funky place, but those are still pretty good. All the others are awesome.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

I think the reason why he didnt want it released is because he didnt want Cindy Crawford to know he wrote a song about her,"where did u get that beauty mark?"

You should have bought Prince - the Black Album, Jay-z - the Black Album, The Beatles - the White Album, AC-DC - Back In Black and Metallica by Metallica all at once. That would have confused him!

My personal feelings on the Black Album -
First 2 tracks are great - grungey dirty funk.

Dead On It is pretty weak - an attack on bad rappers, by way of a bad rap. Always thought this track was the real reason he pulled the album - clearly he reconsidered his position on rap in the next few years.

When 2 R In Love - obviously on Lovesexy, actually I've always thought it a boring ballad, though the sexual imagery seperates it from the usual slop artists put out.

Bob George - simplistic beat, yet very funky and just plain funny, especially the way Prince takes the mick out of himself.

Superfunkycalifragisexy - another grungey dirty funk track with a fast beat.

2 Nigs United 4 West Compton - an instrumental, but a very funky, hard-driven one.

Rockhard In A Funky Place - another funk song but slower paced, lyrics are a bit puerile, childish. Musically a bit staccato.

Over-all, a very funky album, though not the perfect piece of funk everyone seems to make it out to be, but jolly good.

I woulda smacked him right then and there. I hate it when a dunce behind the counter of a music store assumes he knows more than you. I called a store once and said, "I'm calling to see if you have an album in stock," and got the reply "Album? Don't you mean CD?" hmph!

Anyway, that album can get pricey. I've seen it on eBay for $40 sometimes. I bought it used last year at a local store for $8 after I lost my original copy from years ago.

I just bought a used Copy of this off of Ebay myself. I got it, but
haven't had time to listen to it yet. I was wondering though,
was there no Booklet insert with this CD?

No booklet. Just the CD and a blank insert.

Bob George is a masterpiece, but the rest of the album is so-so in my opinion. The legend of the Black Album consumed many Prince fans in the late 80's, myself included.

Rockability

The "Black Album" was Prince's 1st real experiemental album. All the others experimented in parts, but this one had at least 5 songs in that category. Therefore, it was shelved partly due to Prince and his worrying the negativity was too strong and most likely WB's influence.

As far as the enjoyable is concerned, I would rate it number six out of his albums. Controversy..Purple Rain, 1999, Dirty Mind, SOTT, and then the Black Album.

But, as far as how Prince and the jazz/funk/rock will be remembered in 100 years, I think the Black Album will rise to popular-associated Prince music. Kind of like how Elvis' music of which wasn't popular. some now is.
