To some extent, yes. I remember buying it on cassette (!) on the day of release and walking home from college listening to it on my Walkman, deciding it was his best album to date. Over the next few days and weeks though it changed, and more and more tracks just didn't seem right in some way, until I reached the point where the only tracks I liked were ones where I liked some of them, such as "Alphabet Street" (loved the first half, released on single as "Alphabet St (Edit)", but hated the second half), "Glam Slam" (loved it until the organ freak-out at the end) and "Anna Stesia" which kind of leaves me cold but I can see the appeal in it.
My view these days is that "Lovesexy" was the album where Prince's fortunes took a turn for the worst in my eyes, and his music lost that certain something that made him special - after this too much of his output was just too derivative.

Have to say I'm the exact opposite. Lovesexy is one of my favourite albums. It works as a conceptual whole better than a lot of Prince's albums and there's not one weak track on there IMO.

'Lovesexy' is one of Prince's best albums.I love it.In 1988,I played it to death. This era was such a special time.My favorite songs are the title track (which really should have been a single),"Anna Stesia" and "I Wish U Heaven".It's deeply spiritual and one of his most interesting albums of the late 80s.I know many people who consider this to be Prince's last truly outstanding album.
But having said all that,I can truly understand why some folks may not like this record. Most of the songs are not radio-friendly or commercial. You really have to listen to the lyrics to "get it".Another thing is,some of the songs are really "busy",with alot going on at the same time. It's a complex album.

All nine of the songs are absolutely nothing special compared to what Prince put out previously. Even "Anna Stesia", I don't understand all the hype over.

It works as a whole but when the songs are listened to separately, some are quite weak.

"Anna Stesia" is a classic Prince song, imo Might I just admit that I'm fond of the piano melody.

A friend of mine said the same thing back in '88. Said it tired him out listening to it 'cause there was too much going on! I personally love that. You could have listened to it dozens of times and then suddenly notice a percussion part (or something) that you never picked up on before. BTW, anyone spot the sample from Frank Zappa's 'Uncle Meat' album in the title track?

Oooh, oooh, OOOOOHH...I wanna read the flame bait. I WANNA READ THE FLAME BAIT!!
Anyway, back on topic, Lovesexy is in my top five for the simple reason that it's the most focused and concise album concept he's ever had, with the songs flowing perfectly from track to track. Plus, the music was off the chain. "HUNDALASILIAH!!" The only downside was the whole continuous play thing, that really pissed me off, but it wasn't like I ever skipped tracks anyway, so I got over it.

OMG --how could anyone think that lovesexy was not the ShizzniT!!!
Annastasia--the greatest! I'm working on finding my 6th copy because either someone 'gets' me for it or I wear it out. [Edited 6/17/05 7:26am] [Edited 6/17/05 8:11am] "...If she could B muse 2 the Pharoah, then 1 day she might b Queen...."

I did not get Lovesexy until the concert in Nov 88. After that I was hooked.
You have to listen to the album as a whole to enjoy.

My all time fave album just makes me feel happy when I play the album but I find the album ages badly it really does sound dated. It was a great time in my life and maybe this is why I have so much love for it.

My general feeling about any album is if you love or like half the songs, it's a pretty good album. For me this album was the pinnacle of one of Prince's big run's. 80 - 84 and 86 - 88. Musicianship wise the second run was prolific.
Lovesexy - The production on this album is second to none.
