Prince and his song selections Who here thinks that Prince would have lasted on the top of the charts longer
if he had recorded the more funkier songs for himself rather than give them to other artists such as the time. Songs such as 777-9311, the Walk, Get it up.....were all good and had a very funky vibe. And who can forget jungle love and the Bird. Do you think his reasons for not recording them was that the mainstream audience might see him as "too black," or was it rather because it didnt fit into his own musical taste at the time.....whats your opinion? I would love 2 hear Prince's versions of these songs, but at the time I don't think this material would've fit in with his projects at the time I can't imagine him introducing dances like The Walk (on 1999) or The Bird (Purple Rain), but those songs were great and suited Morris Day perfectly, Get It Up when u listen 2 it sounds more like a duet with Prince and Morris Day his vocals r so prominent and the guitar solos r fantastic, it would've been a great Prince song 4 Dirty Mind, but it was recorded after that and I don't think it would've fit in on Controversy, 777-9311 would've made a great Prince song would it have fit in on 1999? probably not but maybe it could've been a great b-side during that time, I don't think not keeping these songs 4 himself affected his stay on the charts at that time he was slowly rising anyways and eventually peaked at that time, and he needed other ways 2 release music at that time LP's were reduced 2 about 40 min. of music, and warners barely wanted 2 release 1999 as a double LP and that only had 11 songs. An interesting note though he did keep International Lover 4 himself which was originally 4 The Time. [Edited 6/23/05 17:45pm]

I think it would be an amazing idea for him to release a double disc
or even tripple disc album of himself performing many of the songs he gave to others through out his recording career. It would constitute a worthy double to his "Hits" package and could include songs such as Love..Thy Will Be Done Manic Monday Time Waits 4 No One 101 Cool Love 777-9311 If I love U 2Nite All Day, All Night Cool Blood is Thicker than Time Nothing Compares 2U The Bird Chocolate G-Spot Get Wild Mutiny Return of the Bumpsquad The Screams of Passion Superhero Ooh This I Need Heaven must be Near and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Interesting to know that International lover was orginally meant for the Time.....I truely love that song and I am very glad he kept it for himself. "Put a glide in your stride, and a dip in your hip, and come on to the mothership"

I agree with IstenSzek, it would be great for Prince to release an album of
his versions of tracks he gave to other artists. He could call it ReCovered
