I don't dislike it. I kinda liked the groove underneath it.

I mean its ok, but when you're getting ready for those Hendrix guitar skills they really dont come. Wow it really just makes you stop and think, this man really was the best lol I think neutral

He played it during the Xenophobia Celebration on 6/25/02. I don't care for it either. You can't hardly tell it's Voodoo Child. It's missing that distinctful "wah, wah," at the beginning.

I'll bring up another cover I didn't like: "Miss You," which he played in London on 8.14.86. For those of you who haven't heard it, he is playing a classic Rolling Stones song, and adds "The Roof is on Fire" chant in the middle of it. Ugh!

Right on both accounts. I'll join u and bring up yet another cover that I don't like: "The Jam" by GCS. Same thing. I was HIGHLY disappointed in his take on "Voodoo Chile". I think P purposely left out all of Jimi's distinctive parts just like he left out Larry's distinctive bass lines. Both versions were watered down. I have heard that P recorded Jimi's "Purple Haze" in early 82. I would LOVE to hear that.

I hate to say it but that version of Voodoo Chile is just awful.

The only song i've ever heard Prince cover well is Just My Imagination.
He's got too much to live up to with his own stuff. The idea of Prince playing Hendrix is mouthwatering. The reality of Prince playing Hendrix is..... disbelief

I liked Prince's live version of "Them Changes" w/ Buddy Miles. Prince did his thing on the guitar pretty well (but it wasn't near what Jimi did on the Gypsys LP.)

I cannot believe some of the things I read sometimes over here.

I'm not sayin every Prnce cover is great, not at all, but when I read that only his cover of Just my imagination is good, I'm like uh ????

Prince has made fantastic covers all his career through like the Villanova Junction from 92 concerts, like his version of Soul Sacrifice in 1995, like his I believe in you and The Jam from 94-95 (they use to set the room on fire and his ryhtm guitar on it was sometimes amazing like in Brussels in 1995).

Now some of you are a bit mistaken I think. Sometimes Prince will approach a cover as a real artist who's not gonna try to reproducethe exact same thing but who will extract elements of the tune to make it his own sound. That's what guys like Miles Davis or Hancock have always done cuz they have always thought it was artistically speaking interesting to do their own thing.

But really sometimes when you go through the posts you really wonder if Prince is good at anything at all. Cannot make covers, is not a great guitarist or bassists, is not a great singer, is not good performer anymore, is a bad producer, his arrangements are awful !

And then you have the twats for whom Prince can do no wrong. Everything he does is perfect. Can we have sometimes a bit of..."middle ground" here ? smile
Il n'y a pas de sentiment plus exaltant que celui d'appartenir à une nation si diverse, si libre et si douée pour le bonheur.
