Anxiety

this is really the main situation in which i would ever really wanna have any kind of prolonged conversation or communication with prince - i would LOVE to dig through his record collection, or at least talk about what he owns and listens to. i have a feeling we wouldn't have a whole lot in common, but i'd also imagine he'd have some rarities that would warp my reality.

I think he mentioned that he owned or was trying to collect all of James Brown's records. Luther Vandross and Patti Labelle were said to have played a part in the creation of Adore.Kate Bush's Cloadbusting is said to be favorite as well.

Others artists in his collection I asume are not limited to but may include...

Tower of Power
Ohio Players
Chic
Chicago
Fleetwood Mac
Rufus and Chaka Khan

Prince is a millionaire. He probably just bought out a record store and owns every album. The better question would be which ones he listens to!

He probably bought out Sam Goody's where one album is $24.99 each. Because no one else in their right minds would shop there and pay that much!

But what he SHOULD do is buy a CD from www.cdbaby.com/timkaye2

I wish I still had the original post to refer to so I'll have to go from memory here...

When I was at Paisley Park - during 'Xenophobia', in 2002 - we were given a tour of his studios. I'm not sure if it was studio 1 or 2 but, in the corner, were a collection of his cds. All the usual funk and soul influences were there - JB, Sly, etc - and an Elvis box-set.

What I do remember, though, was a copy of Michael Jackson's 'Invincible' which hadn't long been released. I asked one of P's employees what the man himself thought of it. All I got was a confused He didn't seem that impressed. lol

Aaah, memories...

Cars by Gary Numan. In an interview with Jill Jones for Crystal Ball fanzine (circa 1988), Jill mentioned that this track was on a tape she borrowed from Prince's car. In fact, the song was on the tape twice!

He's mentioned Joni Mitchell's The Hissing of Summer Lawns and Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life. I know he's got to have some Cocteau Twins, Kate Bush, and Ani DiFranco CDs as well.

you beat me to it. i was about to say that. he said in "rolling stone" that he loved the album which made joni laugh because rolling stone had said that it was a weak album.

It's funny, but Prince's mention of Joni in that article was what made me interested in listening to her music in the first place. I bought "Miles of Aisles" first, not knowing it was a live album. Live albums are usually never good introductions to an artist's work, but it was a great album, and I was hooked.

I bought "Hissing" after having digested a few other Joni discs, and I HATED it at first. But the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me. Now, it's one of my fave's. I had a similar experience with Prince's "Parade." Wasn't too keen on it at the first few listens, but once it grew on me, I was amazed by it.

The Rolling Stone interview in '85, I think, he mentioned Stevie's Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants and the reporter said he put that record on the turntable as he talked about it.

Prince said his favorite Stevie Wonder LP's were "Songs In The Key Of Life" and "The Secret Life Of Plants". He said the Sly LP "Fresh" inspired him to write "Make Your Mama Happy". He's fond of the live Hendrix set from "Woodstock" and dug Tricky's CD "Pre Millenium Tension" (the 1999 connection in the title) and NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine". He also said Fishbone is one of his favorite bands. P has some good taste in music. smile

Obivously, it goes without saying that P is Old School like myself so you know that he would have a collection of some the artist you mention above and more on wax and not CD. Shit, our boy has his roots in Funk, Soul,Gospel, Jazz, and Rock so you know alot of his collection has to be on wax and reflects his roots.

Let me add Smokey Robinson and the Staple Singers. Prince mentioned that he was aiming for Smokey's sound on his first album if my memory serves me correctly.I can't believe nobody mention another of his childhood idols...Carlos Santana.
