I agree with most of the responses, but Rave was also the sound of Prince treading water, trying to remain afloat. Musicology seems like it was made with confidence and competence.

Prince treading water is far superior 2 the crap that radio forces down my throat.And i do mean FORCE!

Of course it wasn't illegal. It was just a clever loophole he discovered.

He went further by securing advance agreement from the correct organisations to his plan to release the promo copies as part of the concert ticket package - a wise move so he didn't waste his money (albeit that the rules were changed subsequently to close said loophole).
