I'm a big fan of Prince and Prog Rock, so I think this is a great idea in theory. After 3 Chains o' Gold, though, I can't help thinking it would be ridiculously overblown and camp. He'd need some serious quality control. How about guests? Robert Fripp would be interesting.

To start you Prog Rock research- you need to get into one of the best bands,(best drummer, bassist, guitarist) as well as some of the best lyrics/composition ever with this group called:
Rhonda Smith loves Geddy's basswork (or so I read) Rush http://www.rush.com

Surely 'Rainbow Children' and 'Lovesexy' could be viewed as prog rock/ jazz rock concept albums?
Prince has always had more 'Prog' in him than many might think ...

If prog-rock (or any kind of 'dramatic music') interests you, then do yourself a favour and go buy Marillion's 'Misplaced Childhood' right now!
Do it!! And then pick up 'Clutching at Straws'!!!!

So what exactly is Prog Rock??
Is it when a song is like a story or opera? If you will, so will I

That is often the case, thought not a requirement. The 'Prog' is for 'progressive', typically in regard to odd time signatures and unexpected and/or rapid key changes. This type of songwriting tends to lend itself really well to storytelling, and 'concept albums' in general.
I think Emerson, Lake and Palmer probably started it all, (though I find them mostly annoying) and the whole genre has been lampooned to great effect with Spinal Tap's 'Stonehenge'. Check yourself out some early Genesis, Rush, or (my fave of proggy faves) Marillion, and all will be clear!

In a way, I guess the Beatles' 'Tomorrow Never Knows', the Sgt. Pepper album and psychedelia got the ball rolling.
The first bona fide prog rock album was probably King Crimson's 'In the Court of the Crimson King' in 1969. The opening track '21st Century Schizoid Man' is a classic. The musicianship is incredible - these guys are as tight as a gnat's arse. Other groups worth checking out are Gong, Van der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Camel and Gentle Giant.

Is it when a song is like a story or opera? Yes. Also characterised by lengthy songs (and sometimes lengthy solos), often with lots of changes in mood and time signature.
