Essence

The Official "For You" thread!

Give all your thoughts/reviews whatever on Prince's 1978 debut album. Strongest tracks etc etc...

We can analyse him LP by LP if y'all are down. wink

My take:

Although not quite containing the originality of the sound he would go onto perfect, Prince still gives a display of his potential and talent on this, his 1978 debut.

Co-produced (with the aid of Tommy Vicari) the young multi-instrumentalist ended up with production he himself deemed a little too perfect ultimately.

His "do it all" approach drew early comparisons to the great Stevie Wonder. Vocally reviewers heard similarities to everyone from Michael Jackson to the BeeGees, most probably by virtue of his often used falsetto which would go on to become another Prince trademark.

The opening title track is a bold declararion of his vocal prowess (multi-layered vocals would become synonomous with his sound).

The obvious highlight is the R&B smash Soft & Wet (the only song Prince didn't write alone, lyrics by Chris Moon.) with it's disco undertones (popular genre at the time) and joyous flow.

I believe For You is a good, albeit a bit naive and inexperienced, debut. But how precocious is he to have co-produced the whole thing? Lawd! While the album is worthy, he still had a lot of room to grow lyrically and sonically. My favorite is "Just As Long As We're Together," particularly the funk breakdown at the end!

I like ´For you´ a lot....it´s good to listen to an album really all performed by Prince, without electronic gimmicks
My fave songs are ´Just as long as we are together´, ´I´m yours´ and ´My love is forever´ (I like that guitar a lot)

This is classic 70's disco/soul. I really liked all of it especially "My Love Is Forever" which is amzing to think he was like 16 when he wrote this one. Great guitar solo!

For You is a competent R&B album by any standards. What makes it so exceptional, of course, is Prince's age during it's making and the fact that he did almost everything himself. The songs exhibit elements of R&B, funk, rock, heavy metal, and some 70s style disco. Admittedly, during the period when I first became interested in Prince, this was the last album of his that I bought from his back catalogue. For a long time I did not appreciate it for what it was; I was busy looking for the type of quirky genius that he really began to exhibit on Dirty Mind. You don't find much of that here. Rather, you find a debut of a shy kid from Minneapolis that is truly impressive for its eclectic sound and its no BS approach to emotional expression.
Soft & Wet, Just As Long As We're Together, and For You stack up against any other music that I have heard from the 70s in fine fashion. Soft & Wet is funky, dirty, and longingly sexual. It is one of the first glimpses the world got of Prince's loving, yet startlingly obsessive approach regarding women. Just As Long As We're Together is a fun, light R&B/funk kissed romp, and might be considered the albums centerpiece. The length of the track itself exhibits Prince's tendency for extended jamming, something that we would see come to full fruition in his 1980s albums and tours. Finally, he makes a bold stab (if a slightly inaudible one wink ) At hard rock with the guitar charged I'm Yours. The broken drum beats and soaring guitar solos forshadow the fiery riffs that we would see on Purple Rain, Sign 'O' The Times, all the way up to The Rainbow Children.
So, at surface value, For You appears to be a standard, enjoyable R&B record. Listen a little more closely, and u hear the first hints of one of the true musical geniuses of the 20th century.

I think it is P's weakest album. It was totally over produced. However. Three tracks can hold their own: Baby, I'm yours and Just as long. An average start, but very much a learning curve.

- I think that, as a whole, it´s a lot better than NPS, but I agree that it´s over produced, but still better than the electronic stuff of 98...smile

It's VERY cool to start your career with a song - here a multi layered technically show off a capalla one - which is a bold and honest proclamation of what's to come...

All of this and more is 4 U
With love, sincerity and deepest care
My life with U, with U, I share

Prince's For You was a great debut album by all standards. Even though Prince was almost too eager to show his stuff (I know the song ROCKS but his guitar soloing in I'm Yours is too much!) he made his point pretty clear: "Here I come, people, ya'll better listen up...."

Cmon' hooks everywhere on this one! What about "In Love" "Baby" "Crazy You?" HOOKS!! it's a bit 70'ish cheesy production, but these songs are very well written.

i love the for u album. and i do have the album. it's great.
the opening acapella.....i love it, soft n wet....when i first heard it i knew it was the prince song i was waiting for but i wondered why he was letting these women sing almost the whole song and he just had that one little part "tell me that u love me girl". yes i was young. i didn't know what a falsetto was. lol

anyway, i love baby, i used to play that track over and over and over and over again. it makes me swoon.

crazy you....i liked it cause it was different and i knew that i was really going to be getting into this man cause he was definitely on my wavelength.

so blue....sniff.....

i'm yourz.....guitars say it all. i was so happy to hear him playing those guitars.

also i had prince bookcovers on my school books and i found his ankh quite intriguing.
it may have been prince who introduced me to the ankh. if so.....how ironic.

for u is a very good album and it's also one of my sentimental favs.
"When we're kissing long and hard
I can almost taste the thoughts within your mind
Sex-related fantasy is all that my mind can see
Baby, that's honestly the way I feel"

Yeah~!!! I realised it too y'know...theres the bit where the drums kick in "Baby" after the line "And we'll go stronger every day"...ITS THE SAME DRUMS in "I Hate U" after the line " I hope u had some BABY(see the link?!!) if not boo hoo..."

Check it out yourself man...haha..boy we are an observant bunch... smile
