You seem to be presuming that the male character has been "scouting". There's no description of how the two people in the story meet.

.

The fact that he had to wait means that he must have met her before she turned some sort of landmark age and therefore had intentions before the girl's significant birthday. That is scouting sex, no?

Do you know the story of how they met?
I think you gotta follow the advice of your screen name dude. smile

Apparently I didn't realize I was so horribly uptight before I thought of my screen name. lol

Actually, I am a massive "live and let live" person because I think that in this life, as Luther says, it's key for all of us to find "any love", whatever that love may be. But when it comes to the underage thing, or perceived underage thing, I get a little sensitive. And not just now, at 33 with two young daughters, but even as a 20 year old listening to the album when it came out. It has always just been like "yuck" for me. But that's just me...

Can we just scratch all this and start talking about "18 and Over" now?

I may be off with a couple of details, but the story as I've understand it is;

Mayte's mother brought her daughter to a show in Europe and they got to meet Prince. They then caught up with Prince at a couple of more shows. Then some time passed before Prince and Mayte started dating.

Fill in the blanks as you may, but she was teenager. I'm about the age that Prince would have been when this was happening. I can't imagine having real relationship with a teenager. I stopped drinknig the P Kool aid back in the 80's.

I enjoy Prince music too. I have been a fan for 20 years. I do not judge Prince. I criticize as all real fans do but mostly I appreciate. But I think that one can look at music in a number of different ways. Sure the "its gotta good beat and I can dance to" it element is there. Hell, there are some Prince songs I really enjoy that I have no idea what in the hell he is singing about. But this song is one of the few songs that I cannot get past what he is singing about to really enjoy the nice guitar, melody, etc. Hell, it's beautifully sung, there is no doubt about that. But the association with the Mayte thing plus other (unsubstantied) rumors at the time just really made me think about the song and I just wasn't crazy about what I heard.

I understand your concerns but the song is about his love for this girl, not just his desire to bone her.

I think he is raising the issue. "What if you are genuinely in love with someone under 18?". It's a difficult issue (yes, and a bit icky).
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
