Prince never dreaded his hair before, did he?

I would love to see that. Then Prince would definitely be in touch with his roots. Hell, he's tried every other hairstyle, so why not de natty dread, mon? lol

Okay. To set the record straight. Prince has NEVER had dreads. He has a relaxer always has since the first two albums. That "look" in the Rave days was just braids (or "plaits" for those of us who know the real deal). And of course people wash their hair when they do have dreads. eek Come on, now. Let's just think about that one.
Come here, babe.. yeah...

I think only white people need to do that because their hair is so different.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

That´s right if you use the "classic" technique for white people with straight hair.I used that method , too, back in the days when I was doing dreadlocks for my (white) friends.
But later I used a different method where you first apply shaving foam to the hair, let it dry a bit and then sort of "twist and turn and intertwine" the hair. It´s difficult to describe this technique, but it´s much more hygienic and you can have thick, strong dreadlocks in a day or two, and you can also wash them a week after they´ve been done.
Ahh, those were the days.....early nineties. lol

Andyes, you have to cut off your hair if you´re fed up with them dreads, and I don´t think he´d like that.
Plus I don´t think that Prince sporting dreads would mean he´s going back to his roots...
His roots are elsewhere.
