I absolutely hate him.

The way he conveniently told Prince about the JW religion and its promises of a paradise where you'll see your loved ones, all after Prince had lost his whole family really bothers me.

Prince lost his whole family before meeting Larry Graham???

Prince's son died in October 1996.

Prince met up with Larry Graham some 10 months later, having originally met almost 20 years before.

But ... "his whole family"?

Prince's father died 4 years after this 1997 meeting with Graham, and Prince's mother dies 4 months after in 2002.

In any event, there's no evidence that I'm aware of that shows Graham suggested to Prince that the JW religion promises a paradise where you are guaranteed to see your loved ones again or that there's a way to see your lost family again if you obey certain "rules".

That being said, I simply don't like the whole Larry Graham/Prince thing because Larry isn't... well... cool. redface He's got this huge Village People moustache and this disorientingly deep voice. He dresses like a ship captain and his wife is just creepy. He's a quarter century past his musical prime. And, with Larry, Prince's music has turned from his own unique voice to some (poor) homage to what soul music was in the '60s and '70s. When I want to hear that, I'll actually play Larry, Sly or JB.

I just think he drags Prince down artistically.
[Edited 6/13/05 13:06pm]

I agree with you on the above point! However, Larry was far less visible on the 2002 ONA tour, only joining Prince on stage a few times, and I haven't seen any reports about his presence since. I guess he's still around, but is his influence declining?

Good point. I haven't seen or heard much of Larry in quite a while, so I think complaints about his influence now are a little misplaced.

That's definitely it for me! Everything else is a bit irksome, but no big deal. But the vibe the two give off when they're together is really fucking unsettling. Can't put my finger on it though.... confused

Orgiastic :
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of an orgy.
2. Arousing or causing unrestrained emotion; frenzied.

I don't know if Prince ever did hold orgies; so I'm assuming you're trying to say he is more restrained, sexually. Well, as he gets older, it's entirely realistic that he mellows a bit, whether that is Larry's influence or not. On occasion his lyrics are still sexual, check out the lyrics to 'Mellow' or 'On The Couch', just not in quite such a blatant way as before.

people really kills me!! why cant they just accept the damn fact that p has grown up and evolved as a person and artist. i mean come on you cant still accept a 47 year old man to still swear and be overly sexually explicit with his lyrics. that dont sound too cool to me anyway it just makes p looks like a dirty old man if he does that. i agree p still asserts his sexuality but in a more non explicit and tasteful manner. i mean lets be real that was then and this is now. so people love and accept the new wiser older Prince and stop obsessing over the young wild nasty Prince. biggrin

You're right; I did not mean Orgiastic in the sense of having orgies. I feel bad 4 being vague; still, my feeling is (given there is funk in Mellow and recent like) ... something beyond my words are missing, emotionally, in his music. I do think he touched on this thang in A Million Days though.

So are you saying people over 47 cannot be sexually expressive, even in music? I do realise that my message should have been more focussed. I do feel in many ways, even though seen as spiritual, a lot of Prince's music is airy, lacking deep emotion, speaking to what many people look for in music.

Seriously, does Larry Graham seem like the person the Prince we knew and loved before the fall-out of the late 90s would become best friends with? Wasn't it even a bit suspicious when he actually moved to Minneapolis, near Prince's house? Sure it must have been all about the music.

Orgiastic:
1. Of, relating to, or characteristic of an orgy.
2. Arousing or causing unrestrained emotion; frenzied.

Orgastic:
1. The peak of sexual excitement
2. A similar point of intensity of emotional excitement.

Onamastic:
1. Of, relating to, or explaining a name or names.

Osmotic:
1. Diffusion of fluid through a semipermeable membrane from a solution with a low solute concentration to a solution with a higher solute concentration until there is an equal concentration of fluid on both sides of the membrane.
2. The tendency of fluids to diffuse in such a manner.
3. A gradual, often unconscious process of assimilation or absorption

1) Larry didn't write the Sly tunes and it was unbearable to hear him play and sing those tunes during that time period.
2) If I am not mistaken, Larry was once a convict and hard core drug user, womanizer. He hided his past through the Jehovah's. Every one deserves a second chance but from what I have read about him, he is far from spiritual.
3) He did prey on Prince's ability to resurect his career while at the same time he was able to bring in a high profile celebrity to the Jehovah's.

I heard that it was finding religion that stopped his drug using, etc. In that sense it was a good thing. There's no point in saying everyone deserves a second chance and then bringing up their bad past when it suits.

hmmm Honestly, I loved Sly and the Family Stone and I liked Graham Central Station. And I'm glad Prince has become grounded in, instead of flirting with, some sense of the spiritual. I admit I tend toward the slightly naughtier in life, but if changing his ways will bring Prince closer to God, I think that's far more important.

That being said, I simply don't like the whole Larry Graham/Prince thing because Larry isn't... well... cool. redface He's got this huge Village People moustache and this disorientingly deep voice.
