any african american with a guitar'll be compared to jimi. sounds crazy, but its true

That's far from the truth.
George Benson was never compared to Hendrix, and niether is Lenny Kravitz.

What do you think about the comparisons between you and Jimi Hendrix?

P: It's only because he's black. That's really the only thing we have in common. He plays different guitar than I do. If they really listened to my stuff, they'd hear more of a Santana influence than Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix played more blues; Santana played prettier. You can't compare people, you really can't, unless someone is blatantly trying to rip somebody off. And you really can't tell that unless you play the songs.

You've got to understand that there's only so much you can do on an electric guitar. I don't know what these people are thinking -- they're usually non-guitar-playing mamma-jammas saying this kind of stuff. There are only so many sounds a guitar can make. Lord knows I've tried to make a guitar sound like something new to myself.

Don't forget the white buttons on the black Purple Rain pants. Look at JH playing "Hear My Train A Coming" and you will see.

But..... If Little Richard were here he'd say "Jimi was my guitar player. He even grew a little mustache like me. Ooh Prince is ME. WOOO."

Dig up the old movie with Chuck Berry and Little Richard in concert from the 70's and you'll see where P got the white lace outfit from and the throwing jewlery uh, maybe not the jewlery into the audience. It was on VH-1.

That's funny, because Richard said that Jimi's playing was just an instrumental version of him going "WOOOOO!!!!"

Listen really closely to the end of "Fire" during the fade.

Well said Black! (Good to see ya by the way). Prince also said in a 1994 Guitar World mag that any guitar player that calls himself good should be able to play the Jimi version of "The Star Spangled Banner". Prince supposedly also has his own version of "Purple Haze" that he did in 1982 in his vaults. It was supposed to be on "1999", but he decided not to release it.

Now, THAT'S a version I would LOVE to hear! He probably didn't want to put it on that album because he was saving all of his Hendrix love for Purple Rain. He couldn't put his version on there though, because people REALLY would have thought he was biting. He was biting hard enough as it was.

nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

Prince denied Hendrix's influence in the beginning, but he has since then embraced it. I still think his playing resembles Santana more, though.
