I think the song is a boring piece of shit.

It's JB derivative, but it's totally boring. That ain't true James Brown AT ALL.

The song is safe, repetitive, without a hook, and completely unimaginative.

Some of my fav P songs are Purple Rain, The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry, Adore, The Love We Make-all are inspired and powerful.

Even when it comes to purely fun P songs (since comparing Musicology to power ballads probably isn't fair), songs like Kiss, Cream, and Face Down murder this song!

Musicology is a bore.

I think its a pretty groovy song
& while I wouldn't call it one of my favorites
I feel it is one of the best songs off Musicology.

I disagree... i think it is waaaay funkier than Kiss. Kiss is a "Pop/Funk" song... Musicology is a "Funk/Funk" song lol biggrin

Musicology is a bore.

Yeah, I wasn't crazy about this when it came out. But since then have only been listening to the live version from Jay Leno and it is seriously funky. Sure you can feel James Brown in there but who here is old enough to remember even following James Brown? To me the song sounds like a happy and mature Prince at his best.

I didn't say they were funk songs, just purely fun songs.

Oh my word, Musicology has got to be somewhere near the absolute BOTTOM as far as funky Prince songs go. It's more than a bore, in my opinion. But then again, tastes in music are subjective by their very nature, so what's cool to some might not be to others. That's to be expected. I hate the song, though.

the whole thing sounds like a bunch of loops to me, but that may be because he gave us (NPGMC) each part a year before the song was released. just sounds like the same thing over and over. yeah, it's funky... but boring. not that i don't like it live or at a party, but it's not the type of song i enjoy listening to at home. takes a lil' mo' than that 2 stimulate the brain

Not my favorite but a cool groove and, as a first song on the album a great promise for a good album. But the song is a fair swindle - the album is pretty mainstream and boring with one or two exceptions (Dear Mr. Man).

I have to agree with that live version comment.

H O W E V E R

Although the song is simplistic and fun, it doesn't really go anywhere.
I was genuinely awaiting a 12" single from this in which he would go off on some odd, purple tangent for another 4 or 5 minutes.

After that disappointment, I can't really seriously take his "true funk soldier" lyric.

Schöne Grüße!

Musicology is like JOTY to me. I didn't think much of it at first, but it really grew on me. It's one of those perfectly made songs.

It's probably my favorite from the album.

I completely agree that Musicology is like Jam of the Year.

Oh wait, that was supposed to be a compliment?

RIGHT ON, Snap!

I think the whole ordeal was an experiment on how far brainwashing can go.

Prince put that 'Musicology' room up and you know all those NPGMC members went in there, cuz at the time, that was the only new form of music from the site.

A year later, the song comes out.

I just wanted to quickly add i am still devistated, that, after all that time the track was laying around, he didn't find the time to spank that song's narrow ass on a 12" version.

"Come On" didn't do shit for a shit album, but IT got a badass remix.

Wha...?
