The rape line in Extra Loveable - A plausable explanation

OK, so it's caused a bit of controversy amongst fans because obviously rape is not something you talk about lightly, personally I never found it offensive, but I know some people don't appreciate it being in the song.

OK, so here's my take on it.

Obviously the whole song is about LUST. The song is called EXTRA loveable, so it's beyond normal love/lust, it's extreme.

Prince is serenading this lady by saying she could even turn on his square mother, and even bring his dad back from the dead because he'd wanna fuck her.

Baby, U could turn my mama on
She's just as straight, just as straight as straight can be
Even though my daddy's gone
Come back just 2 haunt U, come back just 2 haunt U mystically
(Yes he will)
Baby, I know my rap is hard
Not as hard as what's behind door (dig it), door number pants
Baby, U're so sure, I'd love 2 see U dancin' naked
Ooh sugar, I wanna see U dance

"my rap is hard" - So his smack talkin' is extreme, but she likes it this way:

Baby, U got somethin' that would make
A many hippie mighty proud

She is open minded and free-thinking like a hippy, but also sexually - So although Prince's come on is a bit freaky, she's freakier!

This ain't just about your body, baby
It's about your mind (Ooh ooh!)
Come on and take the drop, baby
And spare some time (Ooh!)

I'm on the verge of rape
I don't think U heard me (Ooh ooh!)
I'm on the verge of rape
I'm on the..

I'm sorry, but I'm just gonna have 2 rape U
Now are U going 2 get into the tub or do I have 2 drag U?
Don't make me drag U
I can be very cruel
Yeah!

OK, so are the people who dislike this part getting it now? It's role-play, the girl likes this kind of talk, she's a freak, and likes it wild, Prince has found his match. nod

It's a fantasy, completely consentual - it isn't Prince saying he's gonna rape someone, it's a sex game where the extremes of lust, of male dominance and female submission are taken to the EXTREME.

Haven't you ever just felt so wild you wanted to be FUCKED HARD like a WHORE?! And the guys, haven't you ever just wanted to pound it like a jack hammer till she screams? That's all it is - role-play. nod

Is this about Vanity, maybe? I could imagine she and Prince being pretty freaky lol

That's a very good take on it. Yeah, I can see that. But, Prince was playing it safe, I feel, by not releasing the song. To bad, really. Cuz the music is BANGING!

OK, I'm gonna try my best not to sound like a complete sicko here lol

I've never had a problem with the "rape" line. MetroArea might have a valid explanation but I've never heard it that way. Simply put, his animal lust has completely taken over him in this part of the song. It's like he's crossed the line (hence that weird keyboard skreech). Almost like Frankenstein has awoken.

I know from experience that when writing a song you exaggerate stuff and say stuff you would NEVER even think about doing in real life. It's no different from a movie where the bad guys win. I don't believe Prince really wanted to rape someone, he was just exaggerating the point. He was just expressing something through music he could never do in real life (thankfully!).

I can see why he never released it. Like I said, sometimes you write stuff that you may think sounds cool/funny, but when you come back to it the next day, you realise that you may have gone too far with it. But that's cool, it's only a song, there's nothing wrong with experimenting.

The rape line is ultimately hilarious due to the extremely camp voice that he uses to deliver the next line.

"I can be quite cruel". Yeah, right. lol

He should release this. Classic stuff.thumbs up!

If ever there was an unreleased track I wish this man had shared with the listening public, it's this one. This thing rocks hard! I guess I can see Marrk's take on the rape lyric. Had this been released as a single, the song would've definitely been edited down to a shorter version, without that included, so it wouldn't have been much of a problem.

A real shame, though, that we'll probably never hear him perform this song again. In fact, to my knowledge he's never actually performed this live, has he?

Within the context of the whole song, it's not bad at all.

I agree with you. He's just talking dirty to the girl.

I agree, the keyboard lines tell us this is crossing the line. nod

Good analogy about Frankenstein's monster.

Remeber that S&M or D/s play was a factor in some of his other works. Most obviously being the song and Video for Automatic.

That segue in Extralovable was about D/s sex play.

Good call.
